Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
In most serious fantasy leagues he's not going to be available because committed owners know to practice patience over the course of a long baseball season. But it's worth checking anyway. Yan Gomes has been activated from the disabled list and is batting seventh for the Indians on Sunday after missing the last six weeks with a sprained MCL in his right knee. He was off to a slow start before the injury, but that was a 20 at-bat sample size and this is a guy who batted .278/.313/.472 with 21 home runs and 74 RBI in 135 games last season for the Tribe, earning his first Silver Slugger Award. He should only be getting better in his age-27 season.
