Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
After signing a one-year deal with the Red Sox last week, Stephen Drew is currently playing some tune-up games in the minors in order to shake the rust. He's slated to move up to Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday and should join the big club sometime next week if all goes well. While Brock Holt has played well of late, the plan calls for Xander Bogaerts to move over to third base and Drew to be the regular shortstop. Returning to Boston is favorable for Drew's fantasy prospects, as he posted an .858 OPS at Fenway Park last year as opposed to a .687 OPS on the road. He'll likely bat in the bottom-third of the order and Boston's lineup isn't as good as it was last year, but he's owned in just nine percent of Yahoo leagues at the moment and makes for a quality middle infielder option.
