Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
With Yonder Alonso heading to the disabled list with a shoulder injury, there appears to be an opening in playing time for the dynamic Will Venable. If Friday's lineup is any indication of how things will shake out, Will Myers got the start at first base while Venable was stationed in center field. He put on a show on Friday as well, going 3-for-5 with a homer, triple and two RBI. The 32-year-old had a monster 2013 season where he blasted 22 home runs and swiped 22 bases while receiving full-time at-bats, so he's certainly capable of being relevant in mixed league while he's getting run. He may sit against the occasional left-hander, but should see fairly regular playing time for as long as Alonso is sidelined.
