Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
With Andre Ethier batting just .193/.246/.211 with zero homers and one RBI this month, it might not be long before the Dodgers consider making another change in center field. You'll want to stash this guy in case they do. Pederson, the Dodgers' top position player prospect, is batting .320/.438/.570 with 17 home runs, 42 RBI, and 20 stolen bases through 73 games this season with Triple-A Albuquerque. Yes, it's the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League and his numbers have dropped off a little bit from his red-hot start, but the 22-year-old could be the answer in center field. And I wouldn't be surprised if we see him in the majors in the very near future. With his power-speed combo, I'd try to get ahead on this one in deeper mixed leagues.
