PUD 6/3: Carson Smith

Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.

Fernando Rodney fumbled away another save opportunity Tuesday and now holds a 6.85 ERA and 1.79 WHIP across 23 appearances this season. Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon hasn’t announced a change at closer just yet, but it certainly could be coming soon. If/when it does happen, Carson Smith would take over the ninth inning for Seattle. The 25-year-old has been lights-out this season, posting a 1.17 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 28/5 K/BB ratio over 23 frames. His major league experience is limited and he’s never earned a big league save, but Smith certainly has the upside to be an elite closer.
