Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Justin Ruggiano has been one of MLB's hottest hitters over the past week and a half, batting a cool .450 (18-for-40) with two home runs, six doubles, nine RBI, and six runs scored in his last 10 games. The 32-year-old outfielder has hit safely in all but one of them and has multi-hit games in each of his last five. He's helping his trade value at the very least, but we've seen him be a useful fantasy outfielder before with his power/speed combo. While he hasn't run much so far this year, he stole 29 bases between 2012-2013. Give him a try in deeper leagues if you need an injury fill-in or have suffered through a lack of production in your outfield.
