PUD 8/14: Bruce Rondon

Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus still hasn’t officially named a closer since Joakim Soria was traded last month, as he used Alex Wilson initially but has turned to Bruce Rondon for the last two save chances while Wilson battled a shoulder issue. Wilson is available to pitch this weekend, but the skipper has indicated that Rondon could be in line for more ninth-inning work after converting both of his previous opportunities. Rondon possesses triple-digit heat and a wicked slider, making him an ideal fit for the back-end of the bullpen if he can improve his control. Fantasy owners need to scoop him up and hope that he can avoid too many walks.
