Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
It takes a special situation to recommend someone who had nothing to do with Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline. Well, Benintendi certainly qualifies. The 22-year-old will reportedly skip Triple-A altogether and join the Red Sox for Tuesday’s game against the Mariners. It’s an aggressive move, but Benintendi appears equal to the task. He has mashed since getting off to a slow start in Double-A and owns a .312/.392/.540 batting line over 151 games in the minors. Benintendi is listed at 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, so he’s small in stature, but he has across-the-board skills and should take over starting duties in left field. Immediate success is far from a guarantee, but given the lineup and ballpark, he makes for an exciting addition in most fantasy formats.
