PUD 8/20: Drew Pomeranz

Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.

A's left-hander Drew Pomeranz worked a perfect ninth inning Wednesday afternoon against the Dodgers to earn his second save of the 2015 season (and his first since June 23). After the game, Oakland manager Bob Melvin wouldn't commit to Pomeranz as his new closer, but he didn't rule it out either. The 26-year-old southpaw holds a decent 3.67 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 69 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings this season and would obviously take on significant fantasy value for the stretch run if he begins to see regular save opportunities. Make him a speculative add. Edward Mujica isn't much competition.
