Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
The counting stats aren't all that sexy -- and that will probably remain the case -- but the hot-hitting of Jon Jay should no longer be ignored. He went 3-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch two runs scored to help the Cardinals sweep the visiting Reds on Wednesday night in St. Louis and is now 21-for-47 (.447) with 13 runs scored in 16 games since the beginning of August. Jay is obviously the Cardinals' preferred option right now in center field -- over Peter Bourjos -- and it looks as though the University of Miami product is going to start batting second on a regular basis. Scoop him up in mixed fantasy leagues and hope the runs and hits keep coming. He boasts a .313 overall batting average and superb .385 overall OBP.
