Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
We’re at that time of year when quality starting pitching comes at a premium, which is why it’s time to stash Guerra right now. The 31-year-old rookie landed on the disabled list earlier this month due to right elbow inflammation, but he threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings Saturday in a rehab start with Triple-A Colorado Springs and is expected to make his return Friday against the Pirates. He posted a surprising 2.93 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 over 17 starts prior to the injury, so he’s capable of being a useful piece in all formats for the final month of the season. He’s still out there in more than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues. Happy stashing.
