Points League Auction Draft

by Jared Johnson
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

I recently hosted a points league auction draft with a few fellow Rotoworld writers (Ryan Knaus and Ethan Norof) and a collection of some of our savviest Rotoworld readers. I vetted everyone in this draft, and each participant had a firm understanding of auction drafts, the points format and multiple top-3 finishes in fantasy hoops. But before we dive into the results, I’d like to just go over a few basic concepts of auction drafts for those not familiar with the format.

  1. Until the dollar rounds, you should never nominate the person you’d like to draft. Why? The longer your targets sits on the board, the lower the money pool gets, and conversely, the price point of this individual will continue to decline. Early on you should be nominating either the obvious big-money guys (Russell Westbrook, James Harden, etc.) or the players that are carrying a ton of hype going into the draft, but are not necessarily one of your primary targets (think guys like Giannis Antetokounmpo or Nikola Jokic). The object here is to try and get people to spend their budget on guys you’re either not very high on, or simply do not fit with your strategy.
  2. Be willing to adapt to the draft. You should go into the draft with a general idea of the team you’d like to construct, and have some predetermined price points for these players. However, you shouldn’t be afraid to go a couple bucks over that evaluation if this player is integral to your team’s strategy. At the same time, you don’t want to be stubborn. If one of your favorite targets starts to go into a price range that you’re not comfortable paying, move on to Plan B.
  3. There are two general strategies which you will see unfold in the draft below: Stars-and-scrubs, a high-risk strategy involving building your team around a top-5 talent. Or a balanced approach, in which you forgo the high-money guys in an effort to pick up steals on high-upside, mid-tier talent.

Rather than simply run down the list of auction prices, I will be critiquing each fully assembled team, highlighting the steals, value picks, overbids, risk/reward selections and my favorite low-budget targets.

This draft assumed Yahoo’s standard points system, which is as follows:

FGA: -0.45

FGM: 1.0

FTA: -0.75

FTM: 1.0

3PM: 3.0

Points: 0.5

Rebounds: 1.5

Assists: 2.0

Steals: 3.0

Blocks: 3.0

Turnovers: -2.0

Some interesting notes about this draft:

The hype is real on Giannis Antetokounmpo ($63). The Greek Freak was the seventh-most expensive player in the draft, and was only $2 cheaper than Kevin Durant. Karl Anthony-Towns ($66) will also cost you a pretty penny on draft day, but with Tom Thibodeau at the helm, he’s obviously worth it.

There’s some serious trepidation with drafting John Wall ($35), which is understandable given that he had both of his knees operated on this summer, but if he ends up having a healthy season he’ll be an absolute steal. With a price range that seems to consistently hover around $30, I’m beginning to think he’s well worth the risk given that he’s a top-8 stud when healthy.

I can’t explain why LeBron James went for $39, but it’s a good teaching moment none-the-less. It seemed that none of us were going to aggressively target him, and once he came on the board, we all kind of fell asleep at the wheel assuming someone else would bid up. No one else bid up. Bidding up is a necessary component to auction drafts, and while it can be somewhat risky if you end up getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar, it’s a worthwhile strategy to use in the moments you get incredible steals like this. If you’re going to up-bid, make sure you only do it on players you’re okay with being stuck with.

Below is the breakdown of each team starting with the one I assembled.

For the most part I was pretty happy with the squad I constructed. Chris Paul is a perennial top-5 stud who always seems to come at a discount in auction drafts, I believe Victor Oladipo is primed for a career-year in OKC, and I was happy to pick up some nice value in guys like Ariza ($16), Clarkson ($9) and Parsons ($8). Dwight Howard ($13) is significantly more attractive in points settings, and I expect an uptick in value this season as he’ll no longer be playing second fiddle to James Harden in Houston. I did spend slightly more than I wanted to on Jusuf Nurkic ($9), but he’s had a pretty incredible preseason, so this is probably what you’re going to have to spend to get him, if not more. I drafted Jackson ($5) before news hit that he’s likely going to be sidelined until early-December, but with a $5 price tag and an IR-spot to stow him away, I think I came away with some pretty solid value there. Unfortunately I got booted a couple times late in the draft and wound up with Al-Farouq Aminu and Jahlil Okafor on my squad, which I was not at all happy about. I would have much preferred to spend that money on guys like Dario Saric ($5), Thaddeus Young ($4), Seth Curry ($2), etc., but it is what it is. As for Chris Bosh, no, I’m not all that confident that he’s going to resume his basketball career, but when I was on the clock for that nomination there were other teams out there with money that could have snatched away any desirable talent, so I threw him out there and more so as a placeholder.

Mason Plumlee (Por - PF,C)

I like what Kris did here, he put together a solid base with Lillard ($50) and Lowry ($37), and he could have come away with a steal in Brandon Knight ($10), as the low price tag largely mitigates the risk. Favors at $19 may seem low, but keep in mind that this is a points league, and based on Yahoo’s scoring system he was only a fifth-round guy last year. Bismack Biyombo is one of my favorite $1 targets.

Cody Zeller (Cha - PF,C)

Unfortunately Jonathan went a bit overboard with the stars-and-scrubs approach, blowing nearly his entire budget ($155) on just two players (Stephen Curry and James Harden), and he wound up with far too many low-upside, dollar-nominations. He may have stolen away both Thaddeus Young and Julius Randle at $4 a piece, but there’s just too much risk involved in coming away from an auction draft with eight players that you got for $1.

I really can’t explain LeBron James’ $39 price tag, but I can assure you, there’s really no chance that you’ll be getting him at that price in your league. LBJ’s average cost is $58.8 in Yahoo leagues, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen him go under $40; steal. The leading theory here is that everyone fell asleep during this nomination, but I digress. I think this was the strongest team assembled, and that’s not entirely the result of the LeBron pick. Whiteside ($44) was another incredibly high upside under valued target Anthony added to his team (Whiteside’s average cost in Yahoo: $51.7), Rubio ($13) was a third-round stud last year, so another steal, and I think Jeremy Lin ($8) could be in for a stat stuffing season as the main man in Brooklyn. He also nabbed Kemba Walker ($28) for $3 under his average cost; Walker is a top-20 stud. From top to bottom, this is a very solid team so if you want an idea of how to execute a well-rounded approach, look no further. The only pick I didn’t like was Cole Aldrich, but Anthony probably just viewed him as a $1 placeholder.

Jimmy Butler’s average price is $51, and he’s a top-25 stud, so Ethan nabbing him for a mere $39 can be considered a steal. Myles Turner ($16), Ryan Anderson ($10), and Rudy Gay ($7) were all solid value picks, and with an IR-spot, Tyreke Evans at $2 isn’t horrible. Ethan did a nice job of sitting back and waiting once he got his main guys, and I think he put together a very competitive team. My least favorite pick would be Zach Randolph ($2), as he’s set to come off the bench in Memphis and will very likely take another step back in his production during his age-35 season.

Kawhi Leonard for $65 in a points league is slightly high in my opinion, but Matt made up for the minor overbid with some solid low-budget additions to his squad. If Jokic has the kind of year that most of us on the Rotoworld staff are expecting him to, the $28 spent to acquire him could look like a major steal at the conclusion of the season. Horford ($34) isn’t quite as attractive in points league, but he should of still gone higher than this in my opinion, so Matt extracted some nice value there. I loved the Dieng $13 pick, as I think he’s in for a career-year under Tom Thibodeau, and I think he got superb value in Mike Conley at just $15. Conley isn’t the most exciting guy to own, but he’s consistently an early-round candidate that can be had at a discount. I’m a fan of the low-budget Terrence Jones ($3), Rondae Hollis-Jefferson ($3) and Kris Dunn ($2) additions, although I’m not very high on Teletovic at all. Overall, well-rounded team here.

DeMarcus Cousins ($54), Kyrie Irving ($37) and Carmelo Anthony ($24) for a grand total of $115 is pretty incredible. Melo seems to be falling in fairly far in just about every draft I’ve participated in, but to see him at just $24 in a points league is kind of crazy. Anthony’s game translates extremely well to points formats, and while he may concede a handful of touches to guys like Derrick Rose (if he’s healthy) and Kristaps Porzingis this season, those minor hits should be essentially negated by Jeff Hornacek’s uptempo system. Milaan also did very well with his high-upside, mid-tier additions in D’Angelo Russell ($14), Isaiah Thomas ($19) and Nicolas Batum ($24); and he stole away my favorite low-budget targets in Dario Saric ($5) and Seth Curry ($2). I wasn’t a fan of the Alex Len ($2) or Kyle Anderson ($1) pick ups, but there is no denying that this team is going to be very competitive.

Here’s another example of the well-rounded approach, as Tony did not go over $40 for anyone. The Draymond Green ($38), Andre Drummond ($34) and DeAndre Jordan ($29) trio is solid, although I must say I was not at all a fan him dropping $23 on Pau Gasol (nearly $10 over his average draft price). Sure, Gasol was a top-20 player last year for the Bulls, but he’s a year older and now playing for a team that is known to rest their veterans at seemingly the most annoying possible time in fantasy hoops. Tony also finished the draft with $6 in his pocket, which is not something you want to do. Overall, I think if Tony was slightly more aggressive, he could have put together a significantly better team. Side note, Justin Hamilton should not have been drafted.

I don’t love this team. I see both Klay Thompson ($33) and Gordon Hayward ($18) taking a step back this year, and I think $15 for Crowder in a points league is a bit much. Zev did find some nice value in Bradley Beal ($6) and Darren Collison ($4), and he took a calculated risk in drafting The Process, Joel Embiid ($7), but I just don’t really see this team being an outright winner. Even $2 feels like too much for Faried.

I really like the team build here. As stated earlier, I’m beginning to really like John Wall ($35) at his current discount, and you could make the argument that getting Goran Dragic at $14 is a steal given what he’s about to do this season sans Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. LaMarcus Aldridge at $25 may seem low, but again, the points format can obscure traditional pricing. Aaron Gordon ($10), Jeff Teague ($11) and Dennis Schroder ($11) are all quality high-upside, low-budget targets, and I’m a fan of the Brandon Ingram $2 get.

Ryan put forth a nice prototype of a high-risk, stars-and-scrubs approach. He came into the draft knowing that he was going to pair Russell Westbrook and Giannis Antetokounmpo at almost any cost, and then he did a good job of sitting back and waiting for the late-round discounts. The risk of drafting Vucevic ($14) is watered down by the discounted price, and Noel ($10) should see a nice boost in value once the weird frontcourt situation in Philly is alleviated. Ryan also shot for the moon with Danny Green ($3) and Greg Monroe ($3), which is a necessary undertaking when employing such a high-risk strategy.

If I could make a tweak to this team, I would have chosen to go with either Anthony Davis ($55) or Paul George ($60). I think if you’re going to draft The Brow you need a bit more insurance, and with one of his other primary targets being Marc Gasol (who is coming off a significant foot injury) this team is just a bit too risky for my liking. I will say that Jabari Parker ($12) could be in for a big season with Kris Middleton (hamstring) to spend much of the year on the sidelines, and Jrue Holiday at a mere $3 in a league with an IR-spot is an insane steal, but there’s just so much risk here. This guy is from the East coast, which explains the Rose pick, but I’m really not looking to add the former (and washed up) MVP to my squad in any setting.
