Cousins coasts to AHL honor

Nick Cousins of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms was chosen as the AHL Player of the Month after he led all skaters in scoring with 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 13 January games. The third-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2011 draft recorded his first career hat trick and added an assist on Jan. 17 in a 5-1 win over Binghamton. He has 14 goals and 36 points in 45 contests this year. Milwaukee winger Viktor Arvidsson was the AHL Rookie of the Month. He notched six goals and 13 points in 12 games in January to receive the honor. The Admirals posted an impressive 10-2-0-0 record for the month. He ranks fourth in rookie scoring with 31 points in 44 matches this campaign. Rockford netminder Michael Leighton was January's Goaltender of the Month. He posted a 4-0-2 record to go with a 1.05 goals-against average and a .969 save percentage. He allowed just seven goals on 224 shots and earned a pair of shutouts. With Petr Mrazek and Thomas McCollum up with the Red Wings, Jared Coreau was in the crease for Grand Rapids and he was selected as the AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 1. He blocked all 66 shots he faced in two appearances. Coreau has nine wins, a 2.07 GAA and a .930 save percentage in 16 games this year.

 

National Collegiate Athletic Association

 

Jonny Brodzinski of St. Cloud State produced four goals and two assists in a pair of wins against Colorado College. He has 17 goals and 28 points in 26 contests. The 21-year-old forward was picked in the fifth round (148th overall) of the 2013 draft by Los Angeles. Daniel Ciampini leads the nation in scoring with 41 points in 26 games. The Union College forward registered two goals and two assists in a 5-4 win over Harvard last Friday. Highly-touted 2015 prospect Jack Eichel is right behind him with 40 points in 24 matches. He had two goals and two assists in a 9-5 victory against Massachusetts on Jan. 30. Nashville draft pick Jimmy Vesey registered a goal and three assists in two outings for Harvard University. The third-round choice in 2012 has 18 goals and 34 points in 20 matches this campaign.

 

Europe

 

Vyacheslav Leshchenko was awarded with the KHL's best rookie distinction for the month of January after he generated two goals and two assists in six games. He averaged just 10:38 of ice time over that span. Leshchenko has seven points in 27 appearances for Atlant this year. He was great for Russia at the World Junior Championship, where he posted five points in seven games. He's eligible for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Andreas Johnson recorded two goals and two assists in three games for Frolunda of the SHL. He has netted 18 markers and 28 points in 43 games this season. He was a seventh-round pick in the 2013 draft.
