Injuries are the theme of this week's Drop Trends. Some are more long-term than others, but there isn't much time left in the season so fantasy owners have been faced with difficult decisions.
Ondrej Palat (TBL - LW)
Dropped: 1,769 times
Why? He's projected to miss two-to-three weeks with a lower-body injury.
Recommendation: Palat could either return in the second-to-last week of the NHL's regular season or the last one, so cutting ties with him if you're in a re-draft league is acceptable. Just keep him in mind in case you go far into the playoffs because he is a player who can help. Other fantasy owners should consider scooping him up if you have the roster flexibility and you are willing to wait.
Tyler Myers (WPG - D)
Dropped: 1,453 times
Why? He sustained an upper-body injury this past Thursday.
Recommendation: It's unclear when he'll be available to return, but he didn't skate or play on Saturday. If his injury is minor then several fantasy owners may have jumped the gun. Myers has been great since joining the Jets with two goals, seven assists, 26 shots and a plus-3 rating in 12 contests since being traded by Buffalo.
Kevin Klein (NYR - D)
Dropped: 1,019 times
Why? He sustained an arm injury that is expected to sideline him until the playoffs.
Recommendation: Klein could be back in the final week of the regular season, but he earned just one assist in his previous 11 outings. Cutting him loose was the appropriate call after he hot streak from Feb. 4-Feb. 16 ended.
John Klingberg (DAL - D)
Dropped: 828 times
Why? He has sat out the last two games with an upper-body injury.
Recommendation: Klingberg is probable to play in Sunday's game against St. Louis, so I would bring him back into the fold. He has struggled lately with his plus-minus rating, but the rookie defender has picked up seven assists in his last 11 games. He also has a plus-5 rating and three helpers in his last four appearances.
Calvin Pickard (COL - G)
Dropped: 682 times
Why? He was returned to the minors.
Recommendation: This one was obvious. Semyon Varlamov is back from a groin injury, so Pickard went back to the AHL after playing in part of one game. The 22-year-old netminder could be Colorado's backup next season even though Reto Berra has two more years on his contract.
