American Hockey League

Portland goalie Mike McKenna was awarded with the AHL Player of the Week honor after he posted three wins along with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .963 save percentage in three outings. Mark Arcobello of the Toronto Marlies recorded three goals and two assists in three games to extend his point streak to five straight games. He signed a one-year, $1.1 million deal with the Leafs, but he has spent most of the season in the minors, where he as 12 goals and 25 points in 20 games. 21-year-old Canucks' first-round pick Brendan Gaunce accounted for four goals and one assist in three outings. He has 15 points, including nine goals, in 17 matches with the Utica Comets this year. McKenna pitched a 23-save shutout against Bridgeport last Sunday and he allowed three goals on 80 shots. Manitoba's Brenden Kichton contributed five assists in three contests. He has 16 points in 23 games with Winnipeg's AHL affiliate this year. He was taken in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

National Collegiate Athletic Association

There wasn't much NCAA action last week. The USA World Junior Championship team played an exhibition game against Massachusetts last Friday and defeated them 4-0. Columbus first rounder (16th overall in 2014) Sonny Milano led the way with a pair of goals and Carolina prospect Alex Nedeljkovic had 14 saves for the shutout. Pittsburgh Penguins third-round pick (77th overall) in 2013 Jake Guentzel contributed two assists in a 6-0 win over Arizona State. He has 26 points in 17 matches.

Europe/World Junior Championship

The World Junior Championship begins Dec. 26, but the pre-competition matches are mostly in the books. Team USA will feature a 2016 draft eligible line of Auston Matthews (NLA), Matthew Tkachuk (OHL) and Alex DeBrincat (OHL). Jesse Puljujarvi (Liiga) is another highly-regarded prospect in the tournament who will play for Finland, while Julien Gauthier (QMJHL) will suit up for Canada. We'll feature results from the 2016 WJC here in the coming weeks.
