Tyler Mahle (elbow) will make his season debut on Tuesday against the Astros.

Mahle has wrapped up a series of minor league rehab outings and will make his debut for the defending World Series champions early next week. The 29-year-old righty, who is coming off last year’s Tommy John surgery, has always shown an ability to consistently miss bats, which gives him immediate fantasy relevance. It’s not an easy landing spot right out of the gate, but Mahle is a worthwhile addition for fantasy managers, even in shallow mixed leagues, based on his career track record.

Ian Happ remains out of the Cubs’ starting lineup for Sunday’s matchup against the Astros.

Cubs’ skipper Craig Counsell noted that the team wanted to give him a couple of days off to clear his head. He has still been hitting and doing other pregame work and is expected to return to the Cubs’ lineup on Monday. Happ is mired in an extended slump and is just 3-for-28 (.107) over his last seven games.

Cruz launches no-doubter off Cease for 11th HR

After his teammate Spencer Horwitz blasted a first-pitch home run to start the game, Oneil Cruz followed suit with a 415-foot shot off Dylan Cease's slider to extend the Pirates' lead.

Christian Yelich is absent from the Brewers’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s tilt against the Dodgers.

The Brewers are being sure to mix in ample off-days for the 34-year-old slugger in an attempt to keep him healthy. Jake Bauers will function as the team’s designated hitter and will bat cleanup against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Dodgers on Sunday afternoon.

Mariners’ manager Dan Wilson announced that Luis Castillo will start for the Mariners on Monday against the Athletics.

Bryce Miller will work behind him in a piggyback role. It’s the reverse of what we saw the last time these two took the mound, where Miller started against the White Sox on Tuesday and Castillo followed with another miserable outing to blow his lead. Miller is the only one out of the duo that should be utilized for fantasy purposes.

BAL 3rd Baseman #16
Coby Mayo was a late scratch from the Orioles’ lineup for the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Tigers due to low back discomfort.

It’s unclear whether or not Mayo will be available off the bench or in the nightcap on Sunday. Weston Wilson will start in his place at third base and will bat sixth against Tigers’ southpaw Framber Valdez on Sunday afternoon.

Yordan Alvarez (back) was held out of the Astros’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s tilt against the Cubs.

It should be noted that the Astros planned to give Alvarez a day off on Sunday, even before he exited Saturday’s game due to discomfort in his back. Fantasy managers should be sure to have a contingency option in place for next week though in the event that the oft-injured slugger is forced to miss a couple of games.

NYM Left Fielder #22

Juan Soto was held out of the Mets’ starting lineup on Sunday afternoon due to illness.

The hot-hitting outfielder was feeling a bit under the weather on Sunday morning so the Mets decided to give him the day off to recover. It’s still possible that he could be used in a key spot off the bench later in the game if he’s up for it. Tyrone Taylor will start in his place in left field and bat eighth for the Mets against Tyler Phillips and the Marlins.

MIL Relief Pitcher #27

Brewers recalled RHP Carlos Rodriguez from Triple-A Nashville.

Rodriguez will return to add a fresh arm to the Brewers’ bullpen for at least a couple of days until Brandon Woodruff is ready to rejoin the club’s rotation. The 24-year-old hurler has posted a 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 5/0 K/BB ratio across four innings in two appearances with the Brewers this season.

MIL Starting Pitcher #54

Brewers optioned LHP Robert Gasser to Triple-A Nashville.

Gasser pitched decently in his final start with the Brewers on Saturday, giving up four runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Dodgers. With Brandon Woodruff nearing a return from the injured list, Gasser will head back to the rotation at Triple-A Nashville were he’ll remain until his services are needed once more.

Nick Anderson has announced his retirement from professional baseball.

The 35-year-old hurler had been pitching very well at Triple-A Las Vegas for the A’s, posting a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and a 16/5 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings. If this is indeed the end for Anderson, he finishes his big league career with a 3.43 ERA and 10 saves over 173 innings in six seasons between the Marlins, Rays, Braves, Royals and Rockies. Best of luck to the right-hander in his future endeavors.

STL Relief Pitcher #49

Cardinals optioned RHP Matt Svanson to Triple-A Memphis.

The Cardinals needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the arrival of Brycen Mautz on Sunday and it looks like Svanson was the odd man out this time around. The 27-year-old right-hander has struggled to an 8.77 ERA, 1.95 WHIP and a 26/15 K/BB ratio over 25 2/3 innings with the Cardinals this season. He’ll see if he can reclaim his form at the Triple-A level.
