  • STL First Baseman #46
Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI in a 2-1 win over the Reds on Wednesday.
Goldschmidt was the hero in this one as his eighth inning double broke a longstanding 1-1 tie and delivered the Cardinals an important victory as they try to stay afloat in the Wild Card race. While Goldschmidt’s season hasn’t been good, he’s oddly shown some signs of life as it’s winding down. He had four hard-hit balls in this game and hit three over 100 MPH. That’s the second time this month he’s had a game with three balls in play hit at least 100 MPH after only doing so once since the beginning of July.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #44
Joe Musgrove had Tommy John surgery on Friday, according to Dennis Lin of the Athletic.
Musgrove won’t pitch at all in 2025. The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister, according to Lin. Musgrove is under contract with the Padres through the 2027 season.
  • SD Second Baseman #7
Ha-Seong Kim underwent shoulder surgery on Thursday, according to Dennis Lin of the Athletic.
No information was provided about Kim’s return timeline. He was shutdown in September due to shoulder problems. Kim has a mutual option for 2025 in his contract, but is likely set to hit free agency.
  • LAD First Baseman #5
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Freddie Freeman will test his ankle pregame to determine if he’ll remain in the lineup.
Freeman tweaked his ankle in Game 3 and was scratched from the lineup for Game 4. He’s currently going through a pregame workout with a heavy tape job on his ankle. With the Dodgers season on the line Friday, Freeman is doing everything he can to play.
  • LAD First Baseman #5
Freddie Freeman will play first base and bat third for the Dodgers in Game 5 of the NLDS against the Padres on Friday.
Enrique Hernandez is in centerfield and will bat eighth. Otherwise, the Dodgers lineup is what we expected: DH Shohei Ohtani, RF, Mookie Betts, 1B Freddie Freeman, LF Teoscar Hernandez, 3B Max Muncy, C Will Smith, CF Enrique Hernandez and SS Tommy Edman. Los Angeles will face Padres right-hander Yu Darvish, who beat them in Game 2 of the series.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #16
The Guardians confirmed that Matthew Boyd would start Saturday’s Game 5 against the Tigers.
Boyd pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in Game 2, so he was always the obvious choice. The Guardians could have used an opener in front of him, but that’s not typically a tactic of theirs.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #29
Braxton Garrett was diagnosed with a left elbow impingement last week, the Marlins stated.
Garrett spent the second half of the season working his way back from a flexor tendon strain and made three minor league rehab starts in September, but the Marlins declined to activate him for the final 10 days, even though he seemed ready to return. Now we know why. Garrett also missed the start of his year with a shoulder impingement, and he wound up making just seven starts for the Marlins in May and June. If healthy, he’ll be penciled into next year’s rotation.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #16
Saturday’s Game 5 between the Tigers and Guardians in Cleveland has been moved up to a 1:08 p.m. EDT start because of rain slated for the evening.
The game had been scheduled for 8:08 p.m. EDT. Tarik Skubal will start for the Tigers. The Guardians have yet to announce a starter, but Matthew Boyd is expected to pitch.
  • DET Right Fielder #30
Kerry Carpenter will test his hamstring each of the next two days before a decision is made on his status for Game 5 against the Guardians.
Even if he can’t play in Game 5, the Tigers will probably want to keep him on the roster, since removing him would rule him out for the ALCS if the team wins tomorrow. Carpenter was hurt rounding third base while scoring a run in Game 4.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #34
The Mets will likely start Kodai Senga in Game 1 of the NLCS.
The team has its choice of Senga on seven days’ rest, Luis Severino on six days’ rest or Sean Manaea on four days’ rest. Senga would be limited to three or four innings, but that’s fine with the bullpen as well rested as it’s going to be during the series. The Mets are considering dropping a pitcher, perhaps Danny Young, with Jeff McNeil’s expected return to the roster.
  • TEX Third Baseman #6
Josh Jung underwent tendon release surgery in his right wrist earlier this week.
He’ll need 3-4 weeks to recover. It sounds like the possibility of more significant surgeries was discussed, but player and team decided on this course. Jung suffered a fractured right wrist on Apr. 1. He returned after a three-month absence, but his wrist never was quite right, and the Rangers shut him down with 10 games remaining in the season. That no one is sure this will 100 percent take care of his issues makes him a riskier pick next year.
