Rays optioned RHP Hunter Bigge and RHP Eric Orze to Triple-A Durham.

Bigge and Orze were shuttled out of Rays camp on Friday in the club’s latest cutdown. The pair of middle relievers boast big-time stuff, but there isn’t room for them in Tampa Bay’s season-opening bullpen. They figure to get chances early in the year, when injuries eventually take a bit out of the club’s considerable relief depth.

Edgar Quero doubled twice and was hit by a pitch Wednesday as the White Sox bested the Jays 2-1, snapping their 10-game winning streak.

Both runs came in the fourth, when Quero doubled in Austin Slater and then came around to score on a Lenyn Sosa single. Quero was making just his fifth start in the White Sox’s last 13 games, as Kyle Teel has overtaken him on the depth chart. Unfortunately, the team has quit on the tactic of employing both catchers at the same time; Quero last DH’d on June 23, and Teel hasn’t done so since June 14.

Adrian Houser

CWS Starting Pitcher #57

Adrian Houser limited the Blue Jays to one run through seven innings for his fifth victory Wednesday.

Houser settled for two strikeouts and five missed swings in the 96-pitch outing, but he kept the ball on the ground and allowed just one extra-base hit, a Will Wagner double. Houser moved to 5-2 and the White Sox are 6-3 in his starts, compared to 25-59 the rest of the time. If he’s still with the team, he’ll probably start the first game after the break in Pittsburgh.

Jordan Leasure

CWS Relief Pitcher #49

Jordan Leasure recorded his second save with a scoreless ninth Wednesday against the Blue Jays.

Grant Taylor set him up with a scoreless eighth against the top of the Jays order. Leasure then retired Addison Barger, Will Wagner and Myles Straw, with an Alejandro Kirk single mixed in. Leasure got the call in a one-run game even though he’d allowed single runs in six of his previous 11 appearances. We wouldn’t suggest picking him up in mixed leagues.

Eric Lauer

TOR Starting Pitcher #56

Eric Lauer allowed two runs over four innings and struck out seven Wednesday against the White Sox.

The Jays had a rain-shortened complete game last night and have Thursday off, so they were extra aggressive with the pen today and pulled Lauer after 68 pitches. Of course, they’ve tended to employ a quick hook here anyway; even though Lauer has been plenty effective, he’s completed five innings in only three of his eight starts and never in five outings as a bulk guy. Lauer took the loss today, so he closes out the first half 4-2 with a 2.78 ERA.

Bo Bichette

TOR Shortstop #11

Bo Bichette went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk in the loss to the White Sox on Wednesday.

Bichette finished the three-game series 6-for-10 with three walks. He’d currently be working on a nine-game hitting streak if not for one appearance in which he came off the bench and had one at-bat.

Ryan Burr

TOR Relief Pitcher #43

Ryan Burr was removed from Wednesday’s game against the White Sox with a right shoulder injury.

Burr will undergo an MRI later this week in Toronto to determine the extent of the injury. It feels like a virtual lock that he’ll wind up back on the injured list. The 31-year-old was lifted from his second appearance of the season after recording only two outs. He missed the first three months of the year with shoulder inflammation.

Kolby Allard

CLE Starting Pitcher #49

Guardians re-signed LHP Kolby Allard to a minor league contract.

Allard is back with Cleveland on their taxi squad ahead of Wednesday’s game in Houston. The 27-year-old southpaw elected free agency earlier this week, but ultimately decided to stick around with the Guardians as extra relief depth. There’s a decent chance he’s back in the majors in the near future.

Alek Thomas

ARI Center Fielder #5

Alek Thomas (knee) is back in the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Padres.

Thomas returns to center field and will bat ninth in this one after being scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with right knee soreness. The fact he’s already back in the outfield seems to suggest that the issue isn’t a massive concern heading into the All-Star break.

Josh Naylor

ARI 1st Baseman #22
Josh Naylor is not in the lineup for Wednesday’s showdown against the Padres.

Naylor has been battling through shoulder and neck issues recently so the Diamondbacks are going to give him a break on Wednesday night from facing Padres ace Dylan Cease. That honor goes to rookie Tristin English, who will be making his first career start in this one. Good luck, kid.
