Jake Meyers homered twice, tripled, doubled and drove in seven runs to power the Astros past the White Sox 8-3 on Saturday.
Amazing. Meyers came into the day with four extra-base hits — all doubles — and six RBI in 92 plate appearances this season. He raised his OPS an incredible 163 points (.617 to .780), which is tough to do five weeks into the season. Meyers’ struggles had prompted some talk about using Cam Smith in center, although that hasn’t happened yet. Meyers is easily the Astros’ best defensive outfielder, and so as long as his offensive numbers are at all respectable, it’s probably best that he remains in the lineup.
