Cole Ragans gave up five runs in three innings of work while not factoring into the decision Thursday against the Cardinals in game two of a doubleheader.

Ragans was making his first start since the middle of May with his groin strain, and it’s fair to say he was a little rusty. He walked three hitters while landing 47-of-78 pitches for strikes, and he clearly didn’t have his best command. He did strike out four, however, and the stuff looked just fine. He’ll be a risky option for his next scheduled start against the Yankees next week.

Kwan will get a day off to open the second half of the season against the A’s. The 27-year-old rests with Nolan Jones handling left field and hitting fifth against southpaw JP Sears. Kwan should be back to hitting at the top of the lineup Saturday.

Scott Alexander elected free agency after refusing an outright assignment to Triple-A Sacramento.

Alexander was designated for assignment and went unclaimed. The 36-year-old is now free to find a new home, but is almost assuredly looking at another minor-league contract.

Giants selected the contract of LHP Matt Gage from Triple-A Sacramento.

Gage, 32, joins the Giants’ bullpen after signing a minor league deal with the Giants at the beginning of July. The southpaw offers middle-inning help and nothing more.

Liover Peguero

Pirates recalled INF Liover Peguero from Triple-A Indianapaolis.

Peguero is up to replace Adam Frazier now that Frazier is a member of the Royals. The 24-year-old isn’t guaranteed to get playing time — although in a rebuilding year they may choose to see what Peguero has to offer — and hasn’t had nearly enough success in the minors nor majors to suggest he’s worthy of a fantasy addition.

Guardians recalled RHP Nic Enright from Triple-A Columbus.

Enright takes the roster spot of Paul Sewald after Sewald was placed on the injured list prior to the All-Star break. Enright will give the Guardians a middle-inning option while he’s with the club.

Diamondbacks selected the contract of RHP Trevor Richards.

Richards signed a minor league deal with the D-backs in the middle of June after he was booted by the Royals earlier that month. The 32-year-old isn’t expected to be much more than a low-leverage option while he’s with Arizona.

Mike Trout

LAA Center Fielder #27

Mike Trout told reporters before Friday’s game against the Phillies that he’s hopeful to play in the outfield soon.

Soon is subjective, and becomes even more so because Trout also told reporters there’s no timeline for a potential return to the field. He did do some work in the right field prior to Friday’s game, which is a positive development. The 33-year-old will continue to be in the lineup for the Angels as the designated hitter, and he’s forged a .238/.365/.471 slash with 17 homers and 41 RBi over his 2025 campaign.

Liover Peguero

PIT Shortstop #31

Kevin Gorman of TribLive reports that the Pirates are expected to recall Liover Peguero from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Peguero, 24, would take the roster spot of Adam Frazier after Frazier was dealt to the Royals during the All-Star break. The 24-year-old is a former Top 100 prospect who hasn’t had much success over the last couple of years, but it’s possible Pittsburgh will give him some run with the Pirates nowhere close to playoff contention.

Brooks Raley

NYM Relief Pitcher #25

Mets activated RHP Brooks Raley off the 15-day injured list.

Raley returns after missing the first half of the 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 37-year-old has shown the ability to be a very strong high-leverage reliever in the past, but it’s plausible that New York will ease him into that type of role to begin his season. Either way, without saves, Raley doesn’t offer a ton of fantasy upside.
