Week 14 Rankings

Updated 12/11 at 3:05 PM ET. Removed WR28 Michael Thomas.

Updated 12/11 at 12:00 PM ET. Removed Julio Jones. Moved Michael Thomas down. Moved Matt Ryan Down. Removed Theo Riddick. Moved Dwayne Washington and Zach Zenner up. Moved Chris Boswell up.

With Rob Gronkowski sidelined or limited the past three weeks, Julian Edelman has racked up 24 catches for 261 yards on an eye-popping 40 targets. He’s once again Tom Brady’s BFF, and maybe the surest bet in football to see at least 10 looks this weekend. Baltimore/New England probably won’t be the highest-scoring affair, but the Ravens are surrendering the 11th most fantasy points to enemy receivers. Edelman should get the volume he needs to return WR1 value in standard leagues.

QB Notes: This is as uncertain of a week as you will ever see at the top. I’ll give Andrew Luck the nod at No. 1. Coming off a perfect game against the Jets, he’ll be at home against the Texans’ seriously banged up pass defense. Johnathan Joseph (ribs, lung) will be sidelined, while Jadeveon Clowney (elbow, wrist) will be limited if he’s active. … Russell Wilson hasn’t been consistent this season. The Packers’ defense has, bleeding yards and producing shootouts until last week’s Great Battle In The Snow with Brock Osweiler. With Tyler Lockett and Thomas Rawls getting in gear for Seattle, Wilson has a monstrous ceiling to go along with a nice floor. … Drew Brees: Elite at home, just fine on the road. Despite last week’s zero-TD, three-INT debacle, Brees remains the QB1 by average points. He’s completed over 70 percent of his passes in a staggering seven straight games. He’s already had seven three-TD efforts, two of which have come on the road in the past six weeks. The Bucs’ defense has stiffened, but it’s hard not to see this one turning into a shootout. As of Thursday, no game had a higher over/under (51.5).

Tom Brady has predictably cooled with Rob Gronkowski injured or absent the past three weeks, averaging a modest (by his standards) 278 yards to go along with seven touchdowns and a 6.14 YPA. The first two numbers are solid, but Brady probably won’t be blowing up against the Ravens’ No. 7 (by yardage) pass defense. … Ben Roethlisberger is part of the “weird week” at the top. His home/road splits are mentioned seemingly every week, but how low can he go with the majority of his QB1 brethren also facing tough questions? The Bills have been in plenty of shootouts, and Ladarius Green appears poised to give Big Ben the No. 2 receiver he’s been lacking. I’ll bet on Roethlisberger’s excellent post-injury play. … Kirk Cousins gets no respect. No. 3 in yardage (3,811), I’ll give him some against the Eagles’ badly-fading defense. Five of the past six quarterbacks to face Philly have finished in the top 10. Jordan Reed’s (shoulder) return would be a nice bonus. … Matt Ryan’s status is all about Julio Jones’ (turf toe) availability. Mohamed Sanu (groin) is also a question mark. Depending on the health of his wideouts, Ryan could rise or fall a few spots between now and Sunday.

Aaron Rodgers balled out in Week 12 before getting played to a standstill by … Brock Osweiler last Sunday. Rodgers will be in the friendly confines of Lambeau Field, but the Seahawks aren’t coming for a quiet weekend in the idyllic bay hamlet. Two scores seems to be Rodgers’ absolute floor, but his 3-4 ceiling might be out of reach, even with FS Earl Thomas sidelined. … On the one hand, Jameis Winston is playing awesome real-life football and has a mouthwatering matchup in the Saints. On the other, TE Cameron Brate is his No. 2 receiver and the Saints don’t bleed points away from home quite the way they do at the Superdome. I’ll split the difference with this conservative ranking. … Even with Justin Houston balling out and Marcus Peters shutting down his side of the field, the Chiefs can be passed on. In fact, only four teams are allowing more fantasy points to enemy signal callers. With seven touchdowns over his past three starts, I’m firing Derek Carr up as a QB1 for this all-important divisional tilt. … Philip Rivers’ receiver corps is banged up and he can’t stop throwing fourth quarter interceptions. In other words: Situation normal.

Matthew Stafford is once again everyone’s favorite streamer after he threw for 341 yards in the Superdome. The Bears’ defense has been much softer on the road than at home, but consider: Stafford is still just the QB16 by average points. Before last Sunday, he hadn’t had a top-10 effort since Week 6, finishing as the QB27, QB23, QB16, QB20 and QB11. The Lions don’t want Stafford to have a big fantasy day. They want to play ball-control offense and keep their defense off the field. … Carson Palmer is quietly the QB9 by average points over the past three weeks. Palmer’s decline is real, but here’s guessing he’ll have a useful day against a Dolphins defense that just got lit the hell up by Joe Flacco. … Coming off his second worst fantasy day of the season, Dak Prescott won’t have his usual ceiling against a Giants defense allowing the third fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks. … Even without A.J. Green, Andy Dalton managed to have his best game since September in Week 13. It’s an outing he can build upon against a Browns team that’s served up the league’s most passing touchdowns (28).

Eli Manning has thrown for more than 250 yards once in his past six starts. He’s averaging 218 in that timespan. The Keepaway Cowboys will make things tough on two-QB league owners. … All the way down to QB15 status on the season, Cam Newton is the QB21 by average points over the past five weeks. With his entire offensive line injured, his path to ceiling is complicated. … Marcus Mariota is the QB6 on the year. What does he get for his post-bye week present? The Broncos’ far-and-away league-best pass defense. Denver has served up just 10 aerial scores all year. … Tyrod Taylor is merely the QB20 by average points over the past five weeks. I thought he was getting more consistent, but it ended up being little more than deceptive sequencing. Such is the small-sample size life. … With Jeremy Maclin returning and Travis Kelce/Tyreek Hill cooking, I’ll give Alex Smith the QB2 benefit of the doubt. No way I’ll regret it, I’m sure. … Joltin’ Joe Flacco: Let’s see you do that again. … Robert Griffin III has some weapons at his disposal. He also has three months — if we’re being honest, three years — of rust to knock off. … Matt Barkley has exceeded expectations, but the Lions’ offense will probably keep him off the field.

RB Notes: David Johnson is averaging 142 yards from scrimmage, putting him on pace for 2,279. That would be 12th all time. … Le’Veon Bell is actually outdoing Johnson, averaging a weekly 146. The only thing preventing him from making history is his three-game suspension to begin the year. Bell’s Week 14 matchup (Buffalo) is slightly stiffer than Johnson’s (Miami). … Ezekiel Elliott hasn’t rushed for fewer than 83 yards since Week 1. He’s cleared 100 yards from scrimmage in 9-of-12 games. … LeSean McCoy has been trying to make the Big Three the Big Four, clearing 120 yards from scrimmage in five of his past seven games. Allowing the second most running back receiver yardage, the Steelers should help keep McCoy hot in Week 14. … Melvin Gordon’s 419 receiving yards are third amongst running backs, a surprising development seeing as he posted just 192 as a rookie. The Panthers have been relatively stingy on the ground, but like the Steelers, are getting burned by backs through the air. Their 572 running back receiving yards are eighth most. With Luke Kuechly (concussion) likely to miss another game, there isn’t much standing in Gordon’s way.

DeMarco Murray had the Titans’ Week 13 bye to heal up his painful toe injury. The problem for Week 14 is the Broncos’ elite defense. Denver is much more vulnerable on the ground than through the air, but Murray’s ceiling is simply lower than the five backs in front of him. … Devonta Freeman has four touchdowns over his past two games, and could be leaned on heavily against the Rams with Julio Jones (toe) banged up. Jeff Fisher’s run defense is decidedly 7-9. … Now the unquestioned face of the Bears’ offense, Jordan Howard is coming off a 32/117/3 explosion against the 49ers. The only concern against the Lions’ soft run defense will be time of possession. Even if the Lions play keepaway, Howard’s touch floor and touchdown odds are high enough to lock him into the top 10. … For the first time, I’m going to rank Latavius Murray commensurate with his fantasy numbers. Murray is the RB8 by average points, and played a season-high 50 snaps in Week 13. His touchdown odds have been just shy of LeGarrette Blount all season, but now his touch floor is finally stabilizing.

Spencer Ware has just 352 yards from scrimmage over his past five games, good for an average of 70. He’s managed only 3.56 yards per carry in the process, and scored two total touchdowns. Ware was a monster early in the season, but his production hasn’t been matching his usage. Said usage and a plus matchup with Oakland keep him in the top 12. … Matt Forte is going to have the Bryce Petty blues down the stretch. Thankfully for the first week of the fantasy playoffs, he has the 49ers antidote. … Jeremy Hill was stunningly bad in Week 13, rushing 23 times for 33 yards. Thankfully for fantasy owners, he still scored a touchdown. Things will be easier against a Browns run defense that would be by far the league’s worst if not for San Francisco. … If Thomas Rawls can merely split the difference between his bad Week 12 and excellent Week 13, he’ll be an RB1 more weeks than not. Rawls ran with pure violence against the Panthers. … Despite boasting one of the league’s best run defenses, the Cardinals have surrendered 14 rushing scores in 12 games. Jay Ajayi looked much improved with LT Branden Albert and LG Laremy Tunsil back in the lineup last weekend. He hasn’t touched the ball fewer than 18 times since taking over as starter.

Doug Martin was mysteriously sidelined for the final three drives last Sunday. With nothing compelling to go on, we’ll consider it a fluke. Martin has the potential to vastly outperform his RB15 rank against the Saints. … LeGarrette Blount and Carlos Hyde both have brutal matchups. A good tiebreaker? Which team is actually good. Blount’s league-leading 13 touchdowns are a bankable fantasy firewall, especially with his prime in-house competition Rob Gronkowski out for the season. … The Colts are an excellent matchup for Lamar Miller, but he’s becoming a relatively major injury risk. Seemingly at far less than 100 percent with the Texans’ passing offense making no strides forward, Miller is a risk/reward RB2. He does possess week-winning upside. … Redskins coach Jay Gruden wants Rob Kelley “more involved” going forward. There should be drives to finish against the Eagles. … Todd Gurley has 88 scoreless yards over his past two games. He has four touchdowns all season. … Theo Riddick’s (wrist) health will need a second look before Sunday. If Dwayne Washington (ankle) can’t go, Zach Zenner will handle early downs for Detroit. Washington is expected to play.

Mark Ingram’s toe was an issue against the Lions, but he’s on track to play against the Bucs. New Orleans’ backfield got exponentially more mysterious last week, as Travaris Cadet out-snapped Tim Hightower 24-13. … Isaiah Crowell positives: Workload. Negatives: Everything else. Maybe Robert Griffin III can spark the running game. … Devontae Booker hasn’t been getting it done, and was poised to lose work to Kapri Bibbs before Bibbs landed on I.R. Now coach Gary Kubiak says his ex-Ravens back Justin Forsett will “split” work with Booker. That’s probably an exaggeration, but Forsett could quickly become a factor down the stretch. … The Giants’ backfield is back in flux. Rashad Jennings’ passing-game work still provides the edge. … Neither T.J. Yeldon nor Chris Ivory will be usable if Ivory (hamstring) finally returns. … Rex Burkhead is a guilt free RB3/FLEX if you need an emergency option. … Ryan Mathews is returning to make the Eagles’ backfield even less predictable. I’m guessing the Birds will be fed up with their supposed lead back. … Does Mike McCarthy have it in him to abandon James Starks in back-to-back weeks? I’m guessing no. Ty Montgomery and Christine Michael remain fantasy experiments.

WR Notes: Odell Beckham is the WR4 on the season despite only three 100-yard games. He went 4/73/0 against Dallas in Week 1. … No Week 14 injury warrants closer scrutiny than Julio Jones’ turf toe. Jones struggled to play through the issue in the fourth quarter of last week’s loss to the Chiefs. If Jones plays, decoy status will be a real concern against the pathetic Rams. It’s quite possible Jones gets the afternoon off to rest his ailing digit. … Riding high after embarrassing the Jets on Monday night, T.Y. Hilton is poised to rip the Johnathan Joseph-less Texans in Indy. … Dez Bryant is averaging 88 yards over his past four games, scoring four touchdowns in the process. His revival is real, and it’s spectacular. … Michael Crabtree has pulled even with the inconsistent Amari Cooper on the year, averaging 10.0 weekly points to Cooper’s 10.2. Cooper has just 194 yards over his past four games, failing to clear 60 in any of the four weeks. So why do I still have him ahead of Crabtree. As Rich Hribar lays out in his inimitable “Worksheet,” Cooper seems poised to avoid Marcus Peters’ side of the field in Kansas City. Wideouts avoiding Peters have routinely gone bonkers against the Chiefs.

Jordy Nelson is going to see some Richard Sherman in Green Bay, but Sherman has been a little more forgiving than in years past. Nelson has cleared 90 yards in 5-of-6 games, and is tied for second in receiving touchdowns (10). He can’t be ranked any lower. … The Dolphins got obliterated in the middle of the field last weekend. Things won’t get any easier with MLB Kiko Alonso (thumb) either sidelined or limited. It’s a weakness Larry Fitzgerald is tailor made to exploit. … Seeing good volume in an offense discovering another gear with each passing week, I’m keeping the low-end WR1 faith in Doug Baldwin. Admittedly, the faith is starting to border on blind. … Michael Thomas continues to maintain a narrow edge on Brandin Cooks in every receiving category. That, coupled with the more consistent nature of Thomas’ game gives him a rankings edge he seems unlikely to surrender between now and Week 17. … Golden Tate is a floor play. He’ll provide some ceiling if Marvin Jones (ankle) misses another game. … The WR18 by average points, Terrelle Pryor must endure another quarterback change. So far, he’s weathered them all. Pryor has 228 yards over his past two games.

It goes without saying that Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas’ statuses are entirely contingent on Trevor Siemian’s (foot) health. (What a world.) I probably didn’t make them pay a steep enough Paxton Lynch tax in Week 14. I won’t make the same mistake twice if Siemian sits. As of Wednesday/Thursday, it appears he will play. … Donte Moncrief hasn’t established a catch floor or yardage ceiling, but it scarcely matters with him scoring every single game. … Stefon Diggs has missed two games and is still tied for fourth in receptions (75). … Davante Adams was a catastrophic Week 13 disappointment. Catastrophic. Still the WR9 by average points, I’ll keep him in the mid-range WR2 ranks, though the Seahawks are an admittedly rough matchup. … Tyrell Williams (shoulder) wasn’t well in Week 13, but still managed to play 53-of-55 snaps. Williams looked his ill health against the Bucs, however, and comes with quite a bit of downside. The good news for his fantasy owners is that the packed-in Panthers are a tissue-soft matchup. … The WR16 by average points, Jamison Crowder has scored in 4-of-5 games, and 5-of-7.

A late-season comeback for Brandon Marshall is now in the hands of Bryce Petty. Odds: Not good. … Jarvis Landry’s 11 Week 13 receptions were a season high. With DeVante Parker running into the Patrick Peterson buzzsaw, Landry could repeat the feat on Sunday. … Tyreek Hill was invaluable during Jeremy Maclin’s absence, though he was already growing in stature before Maclin went down. He deserves another week in the top 36. Maclin, for his part, can barely be trusted as a WR4. … Malcolm Mitchell still feels risky as a new Patriot, but he’s been a near every-snap player with Rob Gronkowski off the field. This could actually be a severe under-rank. … Sammy Watkins played 49-of-72 snaps in Oakland. He’s raising his floor. … I’m ranking Jordan Matthews (ankle) as if he’ll be playing at well less than 100 percent. … You don’t want to take Ted Ginn seriously? That’s your right. Ginn is the WR11 by average points over the past five weeks. … The WR10 over the past five weeks? Big-play machine Taylor Gabriel. With Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu banged up, there’s a chance Gabriel is Atlanta’s No. 1 receiver in Los Angeles. … If you have to start a Bears receiver, Josh Bellamy seems like the best bet.

TE Notes: The TE1 by both average and total points over the past five weeks, Jimmy Graham rules the roost in the post-Gronk landscape. He’s established a 4/40 floor to go along with 50-50 touchdown odds. Having silver plattered the second most tight end yardage (851), the Packers are a delectable matchup. … The Browns aren’t far behind the Pack, getting dismantled up the seam for 72/782/9. Those scores allowed are tied for the most in the league. It’s a mouthwatering matchup for Tyler Eifert after two weeks of dealing with the Ravens and Eagles. … Travis Kelce has been the best tight end in football over the past month. It really hasn’t been close. Of course, his explosion came with Jeremy Maclin (groin) sidelined. Now Maclin is back for Week 14. Can Kelce keep it up? The Raiders are not an imposing foe. … Only Jordan Reed (10.3) is averaging more weekly points than Delanie Walker (9.3). The Broncos’ defense doesn’t shut down tight ends the way it does receivers, but it’s still best to exercise a little caution with Walker. Life will be difficult for Marcus Mariota, and by extension, his No. 1 pass catcher.

Zach Ertz’s 32 receptions lead all tight ends over the past five weeks. The Redskins have been gutted up the seam for 75 catches, the third most in football. … This is going out on a limb with Ladarius Green, but both the landscape and his increasing role demand it. Per Pro Football Focus, Green has been called on to block on just one of his 54 passing snaps. He’s being used as a receiver, pure and simple. On paper, he’s become Ben Roethlisberger’s No. 2 wideout. … Greg Olsen’s slump is inexplicable in a vacuum, but not in the context of the Panthers’ offense going off the rails. No one, save for Ted Ginn, is producing in Carolina, not even Cam Newton. We keep firing Olsen up as a TE1 because his upside is immense and his floor has yet to completely bottom out. The Bolts are a nice matchup. … “Saints” always looks attackable on paper, but the reality doesn’t match the perception at tight end. 16 teams are allowing more fantasy points to enemy seam stretchers. Cameron Brate has a strong floor, but his ceiling isn’t raising the roof.

Kyle Rudolph is the rich man’s version of Dennis Pitta, with the difference being his dependable volume comes with actual scoring opportunities. As for Pitta, he has three touchdowns since Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Last week was a fluke until further notice. … Brock Osweiler doesn’t play quarterback. He checks down to tight ends and short sideline routes. C.J. Fiedorowicz is a bankable eight targets at this point. Even Ryan Griffin has TE2 appeal against a Colts defense that’s been stung for 68/827/4 by rival TEs. … Vernon Davis is a shoo-in TE1 in Jordan Reed’s absence. The problem is, as was the case in Week 13, he has a tough matchup in the Eagles. He’s still worth betting on in a high-flying Redskins offense that makes any one player hard to erase. … Josh Hill’s ankle injury will keep Coby Fleener on the field. That’s both good and bad, of course. … Martellus Bennett’s post-Gronk slump can’t keep up forever, but he’s going to have a hard time breaking it against the Ravens’ elite tight end defense. … Like Dennis Pitta, let’s wait on popping Dwayne Allen bottles.
