TE Notes: On the one hand: It had become impossible to keep Travis Kelce in the top spot. He has been held below 30 yards in back-to-back comfortable victories and has just one touchdown over his past eight games. On the other, he went 7/104 against the Chargers in Week 3 and the Bolts hand out the sixth most TE fantasy points. Despite age curve whispers, Kelce’s underlying metrics aren’t all that scary. The culprit seems to be his newly-conservative offense. Hopefully this week’s top-notch matchup at least temporarily breaks the spell. … Whereas it had become impossible to keep Kelce in the top spot, the same is true for keeping George Kittle out of it. His 22/332/3 over the past two weeks is straight outta 2018. It’s hard to think of a defense less equipped to stop Kittle than Atlanta. Let’s just hope the Falcons keep the game reasonably close and let Kittle do more than run block. … If Kittle is the temporary TE1, Mark Andrews is the most consistent bet for the top spot right now. Even if it is Tyler Huntley under center, fantasy managers are all but guaranteed top-12 numbers.
Retired in 2019 and rusty in 2020, Rob Gronkowski is all the way back for 2021. Like Kittle and Andrews, he has a credible claim to the top spot. He has drawn at least eight targets in each of his four appearances since returning from injury. … Darren Waller (knee, back) has yet to resume practicing ahead of Saturday’s game against the Browns. Foster Moreau has proven to be a streaming non-entity in Waller’s absence. … With Emmanuel Sanders (knee) and the Bills in desperate times, it feels like a “Dawson Knox week” vs. the Panthers’ admittedly-imposing pass defense. The Bills simply need Knox’s play-making ability too much to fade him. … This would be about where T.J. Hockenson (hand) would slot in if he’s ready to face a Cardinals defense that has limited seam production most of 2021. … Mike Gesicki was looking like a shakier bet with DeVante Parker back in the lineup, but he went 7-of-11 for 46 yards with Parker active before Miami’s bye. Then Jaylen Waddle landed on the COVID list. It should be a usage bonanza for the Dolphins’ seam stretcher.
Even with his volume and compiling declining, Pat Freiermuth has stayed strong in the red zone, with three scores in his past four games. That is enough to keep anybody in the top 12 right now. … Kyle Pitts made two of the biggest plays in the Falcons’ Week 14 win over the Panthers, converting a pair of third and very longs. His volume floor remains that of a TE1. If only Matt Ryan threw touchdowns. … Dallas Goedert has been so inconsistent with Jalen Hurts under center, though he did go 5-of-8 for 62 yards in Hurts’ most recent healthy start. … What is really the difference between Noah Fant and Albert Okwuegbunam at this point? … Jack Doyle was not needed in Indy’s Week 13 shutout of the Texans. There will be more passing volume against New England, but it will be of debatable quality against a defense surrendering the fewest tight end fantasy points. … Washington finally did it, installing a timeshare at tight end. Perhaps Ricky Seals-Jones will be healthy enough to reclaim an every-down role this week, but we have to make a John Bates hedge. … The novel coronavirus seems to be ending Austin Hooper‘s TE2 candidacy before it even begins. … Brevin Jordan is worth a punt play vs. the hilariously bad Jaguars.
