QB Notes: Amidst the hand wringing about the Chiefs’ offense, Patrick Mahomes still checks in as fantasy’s No. 1 overall quarterback. The Chiefs’ next three games (@WFT, @TEN, vs. NYG) should ensure he stays there. … Going fully nuclear since his quiet Weeks 1 and 2, Josh Allen gets a Week 6 destruction spot in a Titans defense surrendering 8.4 yards per attempt despite not having faced a serious quarterback since Week 2. There is a 54 over/under for Monday Night Football. … Kyler Murray has finally cooled a bit, finishing as the QB9 and QB24, respectively, over the past two weeks. Now he’s dealing with a shoulder issue. Week 6 opponent Cleveland has solid overall numbers but just got flattened by Justin Herbert for one of the biggest fantasy outputs by any player all season. Only three teams are permitting more QB fantasy points. … Coming off one of the best starts of his career, Lamar Jackson gets a Chargers defense that has been limiting enemy quarterback production, including on the ground. To make things easier, first-round rookie Rashod Bateman (core) should finally make his NFL debut. Jackson continues to operate as a history-maker at his position.
Justin Herbert‘s 40.8 fantasy points against the Browns were the most by a quarterback in 2021. With 12 total scores over his past three outings, Herbert’s fantasy output is now matching his real life effectiveness. The Ravens are uncharacteristically getting smashed for the fourth most passing yards. … It took a while, but Jalen Hurts eventually got home with two rushing scores in Week 5. Passing better than he’s given credit for and rushing as much as expected, Hurts is maintaining both QB1 floor and upside in an offense where that is not the easiest thing to do. The Bucs are a severe test, albeit one that is soft on the back line. … Opposing Hurts will be Tom Brady, who exploded the Dolphins for 37.7 Week 5 fantasy points. The Eagles’ strong pass defense rate stats belie a unit that was easily exploited by both Dak Prescott and Patrick Mahomes. … The Patriots stymied Tom Brady before being ripped apart by Davis Mills. It’s hard to know what to expect vs. Dak Prescott, but the only thing the Cowboys’ quarterback has been slowed by so far this season is Big D’s run-game effectiveness. Prescott looks like an MVP.

Matthew Stafford finally shook off three rough halves of play in the final two quarters against the Seahawks last Thursday. He will have had 10 days to rest his troublesome hand when he faces the Giants. There is not a single concerning aspect about this matchup. … Joe Burrow has made summer concerns about his knee injury seem quaint, decisively taking his game to the next level as a sophomore. For Week 6 he gets an injury-ruined Lions defense surrendering an astonishing 10.0 yards per attempt. The Lions have fight. What they lack is any talent whatsoever. … Aaron Rodgers is merely the QB18 by average points, though neither his floor nor big-play upside seems lacking. It just hasn’t happened yet. @CHI is not an eruption spot on paper. The Bears are handing out the fourth fewest QB fantasy points. … Ryan Tannehill was more his big play, efficient self in Week 5 even though a returning A.J. Brown had a quiet afternoon. Julio Jones (hamstring) could re-join AJB for Week 6. Tanne can’t be faded for this 54-totaled affair where the Titans are 5.5-point home ‘dogs.
It’s unclear which of his teammates will be joining Daniel Jones if he gains clearance from his concussion. I’m going to give him rankings benefit of the doubt in this foreboding matchup with the Rams simply because there are so many ways for him to stack up fantasy points even if he doesn’t play particularly well. … Sam Darnold has gotten exposed a bit since the Panthers’ schedule has toughened up. Christian McCaffrey‘s likely return could not have come at a better time. The Vikings couldn’t even fully contain Jared Goff in Week 5, though they have gotten home for the second most sacks in the league. This is a decent spot that could go sideways if Darnold is his Jets self this weekend. … The Panthers’ pass defense has been playing up and down to its competition. A middle-of-the-road day seems likely for middle-of-the-road starter Kirk Cousins. … The Chiefs are just the matchup to get Taylor Heinicke back on track … or is Taylor Heinicke the matchup to get the Chiefs back on track? Heinicke’s banged up supporting cast isn’t doing him any favors. He’s still a safe streamer vs. a “defense” allowing an historically-high 7.1 yards per play.
Ben Roethlisberger predictably had his best game of the season in Week 5 after getting RIP’d in Week 4. The Seahawks have one of the worst defenses in the league. JuJu Smith-Schuster‘s season-ending shoulder injury is going to funnel more targets to game breakers Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and Najee Harris. … Trevor Lawrence‘s increased rushing has him checking in as the QB14 over the past three weeks. The Dolphins’ defense is falling apart. … Carson Wentz came back to the land of the living in Week 5. Frank Reich has had success curbing Wentz’s turnovers and improving his efficiency. The Texans are a good place to get a QB2 hot streak going. … Derek Carr‘s hot start was predictably a house of cards. He is the QB23 by total points over the past three weeks. Now he will be missing his head coach vs. a Broncos defense that has shut down non-elite passing attacks. … Baker Mayfield has been simply horrible, while the Cardinals are again punching above their weight defensively. Mayfield does at least have shootout potential for Week 6. … Don’t expect Geno Smith to be nearly as feisty when the opposing defense has had a week to game plan. … So far displaying zero rushing upside, we have no choice but to fade Justin Fields’ dual threat until further notice.
