  • PIT Quarterback #2
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the team is “preparing as if Justin Fields is our quarterback.”
Tomlin also told reporters the team’s depth chart is unchanged, meaning Russell Wilson is still the starter when healthy. However, opening by saying the team is preparing for Fields suggests Wilson will miss Week 2 as well. He was forced to miss Week 1 with a lingering calf issue, giving Fields the start. Fields didn’t get a touchdown on the board versus Atlanta but did lead six drives that ended in field goals. Those 18 points were enough to topple the hapless Falcons. He also ran 14 times for 57 yards. Fields will be a high-end QB2 for his Week 2 matchup with the Broncos.
  • SF Running Back #23
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) won’t play in Week 6 against the Seahawks.
This doesn’t come as much of a surprise after it was reported a few weeks ago that a November return is likely the earliest we would see McCaffrey back. Regardless, Shanahan will likely field questions on his RB1’s health until he returns, but we wouldn’t expect to see him for at least a few more weeks. Until then, Jordan Mason will continue handling the majority of the 49ers’ backfield touches, with Isaac Guerendo and Deebo Samuel also earning a few touches per game.
  • CIN Running Back #31
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Zack Moss (ankle) “is believed to be okay” and his ankle injury “seems to be mostly a scare.”
Chase Brown managers will have to work the voodoo doll a little harder next time. It’s possible that Moss misses some practice time this week with the injury, but as long as Moss is able to get going by Friday it’s likely he will remain in the driver’s seat in the Cincinnati committee. Moss managed just 52 total yards against the Ravens while dealing with the injury on Sunday.
  • FA Cornerback #21
    Colts waived CB Dallis Flowers.
AKA the guy who laid out horizontally trying to stop Brian Thomas Jr.'s touchdown last week. Flowers was part of a Colts cornerback room that Chris Ballard defended heavily this offseason. It’s pretty clear that they don’t think he took a step forward. Flowers had been a backup who had played under 20 snaps in three of his four active games this year. The Colts will look for help on the waiver wire or off the street for the secondary.
  • IND Center #75
Colts placed RG Will Fries (fractured tibia) on injured reserve.
He’ll miss at least the next four weeks, though after being carted off with the gruesome injury it’s likely that he’ll miss the rest of the season. Fries is in the final year of his rookie deal and will likely be a reclamation project on a one-year deal next year, whether for the Colts or somebody else.
  • LV Wide Receiver #17
Bleacher Reports’ Jordan Schultz reports, “The Raiders’ preference as an organization is to get a Davante Adams trade done ‘sooner rather than later.’”
While the Raiders hope to work out an Adams trade soon, Schultz also notes that they “aren’t going to do just any deal” and prefer not to take on any remaining money on Adams’ current contract. The remaining money on Adams’ contract could hold up a potential trade for some teams — specifically the Saints, who have spent the last several years navigating suboptimal cap situations. We’ll see what materializes in the coming days, but it feels like a trade could be coming any day, now.
  • CLE Tight End #85
David Njoku will undergo and MRI after injuring his knee in the Browns’ Week 5 loss to the Commanders.
The hits keep coming for Njoku, who had been sidelined for the last three weeks with an ankle injury. In his first game back, the veteran tight end played on 25 snaps before suffering a knee injury that could see him miss additional time. In addition to Njoku, head coach Kevin Stefanski said cornerback Denzel Ward (hamstring) and center Ethan Pocic (knee) will also have MRIs.
  • SF Defensive End #94
Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reports 49ers DE Yetur Gross-Matos underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss 4-8 weeks.
Gross-Matos suffered a knee injury the team’s Week 4 win over the Patriots and did not suit up in Week 5 against the Cardinals. The veteran pass rusher has played in three games for the Nines this season, totaling just one tackle while failing to record a sack. Depending on how his recovery goes, Gross-Matos could return anytime between early-November to early-December.
  • TEN Quarterback #8
Titans HC Brian Callahan said Will Levis’ shoulder is “improving” and that he should practice later this week.
Levis suffered his shoulder injury in the Titans’ Week 4 win over the Dolphins and did not return to the field. Callahan said he is better now than he was at the end of the game, and with additional time to recover thanks to the Week 5 bye, it’s possible he’ll suit up to play in Week 6 against the Colts. Levis won’t practice on Monday, but the team’s first injury report isn’t due until Wednesday. We’ll see how things look in a few days, but if Levis is unable to go, it will be Mason Rudolph making his first start of 2024.
  • CIN Cornerback #23
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Bengals fear CB Dax Hill suffered a torn ACL in Week 5’s loss to the Ravens.
Hill exited Sunday’s game against the Ravens and did not return to the field. The third-year corner had his leg twisted up while attempting to make a cut and was ruled out shortly after leaving the field. The team will take a closer look to confirm, but this would be a brutal loss for a secondary that’s allowed 350-plus passing yards in each of its last three games.
  • NE Quarterback #10
ESPN’s Mike Reiss says Patriots HC Jerod May “seems to strongly be considering switch to Drake Maye” after a “notable shift” in his answers regarding QB on Monday.
It’s worth noting that this is Reiss’ opinion based on his experience of having sat through many press conferences with Mayo. Reiss notes, “Mayo said last week the way the team won its only game was ‘unsustainable’,” which was a Week 1 one over the Bengals in which Jacoby Brissett threw for 121 scoreless yards. The Patriots are amongst the worst passing teams in the league. Brissett has thrown for 696 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception this season while completing only 58.5 percent of his passes. Playing behind one of the league’s worst offensive lines isn’t doing him any added favors, but the younger, more athletic Maye could help extend plays and give the Patriots more of a vertical passing attack. We’ll see how things unfold throughout the week, but Brissett’s time as the team’s start appears to be drawing to a close.
