Playing out of the fifth-to-last twosome, non-member and World No. 302 Marcel Siem birdied two of his final three holes en route to an even-par 35-35=70 in the third round of The 149th Open, dipping two spots to T9 on 6-under 204, six swings back of past champ and leader Louis Oosthuizen (69).
Siem was 10-for-10 in fairways hit before disaster struck at the par-5 14th. He arrived there bogey-free 1-under, downsized to 2-iron off the tee, and promptly heeled it right and OB. The German, in the field off his maiden Challenge Tour victory last week in France, over-corrected his next into the rough, laid up into a fairway divot, lob-wedged it into a plugged lie in a greenside bunker, and ultimately swallowed an 8. To his credit, the 41-year-old and four-time European Tour winner rebounded with circles at 16 and 18 to get back into the top 10. He’ll play out of the sixth-to-last pairing in R4 with Kevin Streelman, looking to better a major-best T12 at the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. (See link to post-round comments below).
