NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.
Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check NBC Sports EDGE’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.
Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 2W, 2D, 2UTIL 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL) and Yahoo has a $200 budget for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).
There are only two games on Wednesday.
Forwards:
J.T. Miller (Vancouver) – W - $8,000 FanDuel, $6,500 DraftKings, $23 Yahoo
Even if there’s only two games today, there are a lot of high-end forwards available. None of them are hotter than Miller though. Miller is going into tonight’s action on a nine-game point streak. He’s recorded six goals and 17 points over that span. That hot streak has pushed him up to 22 goals and 63 points in 55 contests this season.
Evgeny Kuznetsov (Washington) – C - $7,100 FanDuel, $6,100 DraftKings, $23 Yahoo
It’s a testament to how consistent Kuznetsov has been this season that his point drought of three straight games from Feb. 14-17 is about as bad as it’s gotten for him this season. Since that minor cold stretch, he’s bounced right back with a goal and five points in six games. With that he has 16 goals and 53 points in 55 games in 2021-22.
Nick Suzuki (Montreal) – C - $6,100 FanDuel, $5,400 DraftKings, $19 Yahoo
The Canadiens have been hot lately and Suzuki has been doing his part in keeping them that way. Over his last five contests he’s scored an incredible four goals and 10 points in five games. He had been underperforming somewhat by his standards before his latest hot streak, but now he has 13 goals and 40 points in 56 contests, which is roughly in line with how he did last season.
Bargain Bin: Bo Horvat (VAN) - $5,900 FanDuel/$4,900 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Nicklas Backstrom (WAS) - $5,400 FanDuel/$4,400 DraftKings/$16 Yahoo, Cole Caufield (MON) - $5,200 FanDuel/$5,000 DraftKings/$19 Yahoo, Tanner Pearson (VAN) - $4,600 FanDuel/$4,100 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Conor Sheary (WAS) - $4,500 FanDuel/$3,700 DraftKings/$15 Yahoo, Artturi Lehkonen (MON) - $4,400 FanDuel/$2,900 DraftKings/$16 Yahoo
Defensemen:
Quinn Hughes (Vancouver) - $6,000 FanDuel, $5,500 DraftKings, $20 Yahoo
Hughes has been on a roll with two goals and 10 points in his last eight contests. With four goals and 44 points in 53 contests, he’s 10th in the league in the defensemen scoring race. That’s pretty fair given his price point, especially while he’s hot.
Bargain Bin: Dmitry Orlov (WAS) - $4,600 FanDuel/$4,100 DraftKings/$15 Yahoo, Ben Chiarot (MON) - $4,500 FanDuel/$4,500 DraftKings/$14 Yahoo, Brad Hunt (VAN) - $3,900 FanDuel/$2,700 DraftKings/$13 Yahoo
Goaltenders:
Thatcher Demko (Vancouver) - $8,000 FanDuel, $8,000 DraftKings, $31 Yahoo
A month ago, the fact that the Canucks were set to face the Montreal Canadiens would have been a huge plus for Demko. Martin St. Louis has done a fantastic job of giving the Canadiens confidence though since he took over as the team’s bench boss. In fact, the Canadiens are on quite a roll, having won seven of their last eight games. So why am I recommending Demko? Frankly, a lack of options. The four teams playing today are Vancouver, Montreal, Washington, and Edmonton, so it’s not like any of the opponents are a goaltenders’ dream to face. Demko is also arguably the best goaltender projected to start tonight with his 25-16-2 record, 2.63 GAA, and .917 save percentage in 45 contests.
Bargain Bin: Ilya Samsonov (WAS) - $7,300 FanDuel/$7,600 DraftKings/$26 Yahoo
