There are not too many times these days when a team scores 11 times but that’s what happened on Sunday as the Pittsburgh Penguins put up an 11 spot on the Red Wings.

It has never happened since the salary cap came into being in 2005 as the 2003 Washington Capitals beat the Florida Panthers 12-2. It was the second time this season that Detroit gave up double digits in goals as they gave up 10 to Toronto in a 10-7 loss on Feb. 26.

There were eight games in the NHL Sunday.

TAMPA BAY 4 NEW YORK ISLANDERS 1

Mikhail Sergachev scored once and added an assist to give Tampa Bay a 4-1 win over the New York Islanders.

It was a costly loss for the Islanders as starting netminder Ilya Sorokin had to leave the game after 40 minutes with an upper-body injury after giving up two goals on 20 shots. He took the loss and is 22-14-7 with a 2.30 GAA and a .927 save percentage. Semyon Varlamov came on in relief and gave up two goals in the third period on 14 shots. Sorokin is currently day-to-day.

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 23 saves and is 33-14-4 with a 2.36 GAA and a .920 save percentage. He is tied with Triston Jarry for the NHL lead in wins.

Brock Nelson scored the only goal of the first period as he now has a four-game points streak with four goals and seven points. It was his 31st goal of the season.

But the Lightning struck for two in the second and two in the third as Victor Hedman with his 18th and Alex Killorn with his 20th, scored in the second while Ross Colton (12) and Sergachev scored in the third.

Pat Maroon and Ross Johnston each picked up five-minute majors for fighting.

PITTSBURGH 11 DETROIT 2

In the biggest rout of the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins scored 11 times and easily beat the Detroit Red Wings 11-2.

The offensive star was Evgeni Malkin who return to action Sunday after missing Friday’s game with an illness. Malkin had the hat trick as well as an assist as he has 16 goals and 32 points in just 30 games.

Every Pittsburgh forward had at least one point and only defensemen Brian Dumoulin (who was a team-high plus-five) and Marcus Pettersson failed to pick up a point.

Bryan Rust, Sidney Crosby, Teddy Blueger and Rickard Rakell each had a goal and an assist while Danton Heinen and Jeff Carter had a goal and an assist.

Brian Boyle and Kasperi Kapanen also scored for the Penguins who had 35 shots on goal, the same as Detroit.

Tristan Jarry made 33 saves for the win as he is 33-13-6 with a 2.31 GAA and a .922 save percentage.

It was a tough evening for Detroit’s two netminders as Alex Nedeljkovic picked up the start and gave up seven goals on 22 shots. He was pulled after giving up four goals on 12 shots and then returned after Calvin Pickard suffered an injury at the 5:29 mark of the third as he gave up four goals on 13 shots. Nedeljkovic then gave up the final three goals on 10 shots as he is 17-20-7 with a 3.26 GAA and a .901 save percentage. There was no word after the game on the health of Pickard.

Jakub Vrana scored and set up Dylan Larkin for his 28th of the season which was on the power play.

Kris Letang had three assists while fellow blueliner John Marino had two. Every Penguin save for Mike Matheson was a plus while only Sam Gagner and Olli Juolevi were even and not a minus-player for Detroit.

Tyler Bertuzzi had seven shots on goal for Detroit while Michael Rasmussen had three minors.

NEW YORK RANGERS 5 BUFFALO 4 (Overtime)

K’Andre Miller scored the overtime winner to give the New York Rangers a tough-fought 5-4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Frank Vatrano, who was moved up to the top line with Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad, opened the scoring with a pair of goals but Rasmus Asplund cut the lead in half before the end of the first period.

Will Butcher with only his second of the season evened the score at 2 and then Kyle Okposo gave Buffalo its first lead of the game with his 16th.

Alexis Lafreniere, who was taken off the top line last week, scored his second goal in two games and extended his points streak to six-games and also added an assist to give him 15 goals and 25 points in 64 games.

The two teams traded goals in the third as Artemi Panarin potted his 17th of the season while Jeff Skinner scored his 27th with 6:53 remaining to even the score at 4. It was a power play effort.

Alexandar Georgiev picked up his third straight win although it was not pretty as he gave up four goals on 17 shots. He is 10-9-2 with a 3.08 GAA and a .894 save percentage.

Craig Anderson took the overtime loss as he stopped 26 shots. He is 12-9-1 with a 3.13 GAA and a .901 save percentage.

Rasmus Dahlin, Casey Mittelstadt and Andrew Copp each had a pair of assists.

Ryan Strome suffered a lower-body injury in the first period and did not return. Coach Gerard Gallant didn’t think the injury was serious.

NASHVILLE 5 PHILADELPHIA 4

Tanner Jeannot completed his Gordie Howe hat trick with the game-winning goal with just 1:19 left in the third to give the Nashville Predators a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Jeannot has been an unsung and fairly unknown rookie this season outside of Nashville but he has had a great season with 22 goals and 17 assists with 106 penalty minutes, a true bonus for the Preds this season.

The Flyers got off to an early 2-0 lead as Travis Sanheim and Joel Farabee scored in the first period.

The Predators came back in a wild second stanza as Yakov Trenin scored a pair, sandwiched around a Max Willman goal and then Luke Kunin with his 12th of the season tied the score at 3.

Filip Forsberg with his 37th of the season, gave Nashville its first lead but James van Riemsdyk with his 17th, scored with 48 seconds left in the second.

Juuse Saros made only 19 saves but picked up the win. He is 32-20-3 with a 2.58 GAA and a .920 save percentage.

Martin Jones made 30 saves in taking the loss. Jones is 8-13-3 with a 3.38 GAA and a .901 save percentage.

Roman Josi had a pair of assists in the win. He has a 13-game points streak and has 81 points this season, as well as 28 points during the 13-game streak. He is making an outstanding case for himself for the Norris despite the season that Colorado’s Cale Makar is having.

Mikael Granlund and Alexandre Carrier also had a pair of assists.

Kevin Fiala’s power play goal just 15 seconds into overtime gave the Minnesota Wild a much-needed 3-2 win over front-running Colorado Sunday.

The Wild opened the scoring in the second period, when who else but Kirill Kaprizov scored his 36th of the season as he moved to within two points of Marian Gaborik’s all-time season high for the Wild of 83 points, set in the 2007-08 season.

The Wild took that lead into the third when Nazem Kadri and Mikko Rantanen gave Colorado a 2-1 lead by the midway point of the third but Ryan Hartman with his career-high 27th goal of the season, evened the game at 2 with 5:27 left in the third and sent it into overtime.

TORONTO 5 FLORIDA 2

John Tavares scored twice on the power play, including the game winner, to lead the Maple Leafs to a 5-2 win over Atlantic Division leading Florida.

The win moved Toronto back into third place in the Atlantic after a disappointing loss to Montreal Saturday.

Morgan Rielly had a goal and two assists in the win with Ilya Mikheyev and Auston Matthews also scored.

It was Matthews’ league-leading 48th goal as he broke a tie with Leon Draisaitl. The empty net goal was scored with only one second remaining in the game and with the assist on Rielly’s goal, he has 83 points this season. Matthews has a nine-game points streak and has 11 goals in the streak.

Each team had scored three times in the shootout with Cole Caufield, Rem Pitlick and Mike Hoffman scoring for Montreal while Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes and Dougie Hamilton replied for New Jersey before Sharangovich ended it.

Hughes scored both New Jersey goals, the second one coming on the power play, but Josh Anderson with his 16th and Pitlick with his 13th with just 42 seconds remaining in the third, tied it up and sent the game into extra time.
