Blake Kennedy tossed together a 4-under-par 35-32=67 during round one of the Valspar Championship, good for an early slice of fifth place with play still in progress on Thursday afternoon.

The Clemson product has played in just one PGA TOUR event (missed cut at the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship) but earned his way into the field through Monday Qualifying this week. Today, he split just 3-of-13 fairways but still managed a respectable 11 greens in regulation and showcased a strong short game in order to just drop one shot all day. That included key par-savers from 16 feet and 9 feet at the 4th and 8th, respectively. He’ll need to tidy up the driver as the week goes on but it will be a great story if he can continue to hold his own against some of the big names near the top of the board.

Firing a 5-under 67 in Monday’s Qualifier, Blake Kennedy is now set to play in the Valspar Championship this week. In what will be his first start on the PGA Tour since the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship, Kennedy could make for a fantastic story.

Turning pro in 2016 out of Clemson University, Kennedy has struggled to find his footing. Playing thru conditional status during the 2020 season on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, the now 28-year-old’s best effort came as a T-22 finish at The Classic. A year removed from Michael Visacki playing in the Valspar Championship, perhaps Kennedy will provide a similar storyline for golf fans to follow.
