CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jim Furyk’s form is rounding into shape as he heads home to The Players Championship next week at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course.
So is his attitude.
Seven shots back at Sunday’s start, Furyk mounted a spirited charge at the Wells Fargo Championship, briefly taking a share of the lead before he ran out of holes.
A 7-under-par 65 left Furyk in second place, one shot behind winner J.B. Holmes.
Furyk won Wells Fargo in ’06, but he didn’t even play here a year ago. He said he needed an attitude adjustment.
“I didn’t feel like my head was in a good place,” said Furyk, who makes his home in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. “I wasn’t having a lot of fun playing, and I wasn’t really enjoying the game at the time. I was treating it like a job, really, instead of having fun.
“I made up my mind to change my attitude, and the way I looked at it, because I wasn’t having a good time, and I know that you’re going to play better, or I’m going to play better, the more I go out like a kid. I started playing this game as a kid because it was a blast! So, I wanted to attack it that way, and enjoy myself out here, and I think that early last year my results weren’t that good.”
“If you talk about my attitude then, and my attitude now, I think my results are a lot better, because I’m approaching the game from a better angle.”
Furyk’s 65 Sunday was his best score in a PGA Tour event since shooting a 59 at the BMW Championship last September. It was his best finish since he placed second at the PGA Championship last August. It’s his third top-10 finish in his last four starts.
