SEA ISLAND, Ga. – A three-man race quickly became a coronation at the Jones Cup Invitational as Beau Hossler cruised to victory with a 2-under 70 on Sunday at Ocean Forest Golf Club.
Hossler began the day tied for the lead with Will Grimmer and Blair Hamilton, but pulled away with a birdie at the fifth hole. Combined with Grimmer’s double bogey-5 at No. 5, Hossler’s lead ballooned to three strokes and no one got any closer.
“It was a nice birdie and a three-shot swing which made it a big hole,” Hossler said. “From that point my game plan was just make some pars, hit it in the middle of the green.”
Hossler nearly made a hole-in-one at the par-3 ninth and added birdies at Nos. 10 and 11 on his way to a six-stroke victory.
The victory, which also secured Hossler a sponsor exemption into this fall’s RSM Classic, completed another solid week for the University of Texas.
Along with the junior’s triumph, Longhorn teammates Gavin Hall (70) and Taylor Funk (75) finished tied for ninth place.
Hall wasn’t surprised by Hossler’s commanding performance after all the time the two have spent practicing and playing against each other at Texas.
“Beau has found another level,” said Hall, whose 2-under round tied him for the low card on Sunday. “We know we have a ton of talent and the main goal is winning [the NCAA Championship], but we’re not thinking about that right now.”
