DUBLIN, Ohio – Phil Mickelson rebounded from a difficult finish on Thursday at the Memorial, posting a 2-under 70 on Friday to easily make the cut as he prepares for the U.S. Open in two weeks.
Mickelson, who played his last three holes in 5 over par on Thursday, was much sharper with his driver and his iron play on Day 2, hitting 11 of 14 fairways and 13 of 18 greens in regulation, and was pleased with his progress heading into the weekend.
Although within striking distance at the time he finished, Mickelson dismissed questions about contending this week.

“Baby steps here,” he said. “I’ve had a little rough go. Although my game feels good, I still have some challenges mentally and finishing the round yesterday, that’s a great example.”
Mickelson plans to play the next two weeks as he prepares for the U.S. Open, where he will attempt to complete the career Grand Slam at an event where he has finished second on six occasions.
After two weeks of solid practice, Lefty was feeling better about his form than he has all season.
“My game is feeling good,” he said. “I just have some challenges and I’m glad I’m playing this weekend.”
