LPGA to Play Tournament in Mexico City

The LPGA will play a new tournament, the MasterCard Classic, at Bosque Real Country Club in Mexico City in 2005.. The 54-hole event will feature a 132-player field, which includes four Mexican-born players, March 4-6.

As womens professional golf continues to expand on the world stage, the LPGA is pleased to add the $1.2 million MasterCard Classic in Mexico to our 2005 schedule, said Ty M. Votaw, LPGA commissioner. This will mark the first time in 30 years that an officially sanctioned LPGA event has been held in Mexico.’

The event is being held here at least partially because of the presence of Mexican star Lorena Ochoa on the LPGA tour.

The last LPGA event held in Mexico was the Bing Crosby International Classic, which enjoyed a two-year stint at San Isidro Country Club in Guadaara, Mexico.
