DORAL, Fla. – At 41 years young it’s natural to imagine Ernie Els is closer to the 18th green than the first tee of his career, but the big South African warned on Tuesday at Doral that he’s not ready for his golden years just yet.
“I definitely do feel like I’ve still got a major, maybe two, in me,” Els said.
In Els’ defense it is more than just wishful thinking. The Grand Slam dance card lines up particularly well for him this year with Congressional (where he won the 1997 U.S. Open) and Royal St. George’s in the rotation.
“Back in the history books will tell you, I was the first guy to shoot four rounds in the 60s, OK. I have to brag about that. I did that at Royal St. George’s in ’93,” he smiled.
