Although the deadline to qualify for the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship is still more than a week away (Feb. 14), a few players are making moves this week that could earn them a trip to Dove Mountain.
Thongchai Jaidee is currently tied for 15th at the Qatar Masters and at 68th in the World Golf Ranking he needs a solid week to punch his ticket to pro golf’s big dance barring any injuries within the current top 64.While Lucas Glover, currently tied for fifth at TPC Scottsdale, is the ultimate bubble boy at 64th.
PGA Tour sweetheart Jhonattan Vegas also needs another good week at TPC Scottsdale. The Bob Hope Classic winner has climbed from 182nd to start the year to 69th and made it clear the Match Play was on his mind last week at Torrey Pines.
“I’ll play (Waste Management Phoenix Open) and then the Match Play . . . hopefully,” the rookie smiled.
Careful what you wish for, however. Martin Kaymer, the most consistent player in golf right now, could claim the top spot in the World Ranking this week in Qatar, which could make for quick week for whoever lands the coveted final spot into the year’s first World Golf Championship.
