PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Counted 21 satellite TV trucks in the parking lot at the Sawgrass Marriott upon arrival this morning for Tiger Woods’ first public appearance in more than two months.
That’s a personal record for anything outside the Super Bowl.
In more than 28 years in journalism, I’ve never covered an event with more satellite TV trucks. It’s almost double the number that were stationed at the entrance to Isleworth outside Woods’ home in the days after the accident that set off a chain of wild news stories leading to this day.
For those of us here to cover the event who are not among the three wire services reporters actually in the room with Woods, we’re set up in Marriott’s Champions Ballroom. It’s about a mile from the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse where Woods will speak.
There are eight flat screen television sets and one large projection screen here in the ballroom that will deliver the TV feed. Thirty minutes out, there are about 75 or so media members mingling in the room. In the parking lot outside, TV reporters are doing stand-up reports.
