Curry Takes Warly Lead at Ixtapa Classic

IXTAPA, Mexico -- Lee Curry fired a 7-under-par 65 Wednesday to take the lead after the first round of the Corona Ixtapa Classic. Curry stands one stroke clear of Jason Higton and Greater Sacramento Open winner Ben Pettitt.

Danny Mijovic posted a 5-under-par 67 at Palma Real Golf Club. He is joined in fourth place by Clodomiro Carranza, Clint Jensen and Mauricio Molina.

Curry, a tour rookie, earned his playing privileges last fall.

Derek Gillespie, the defending champion, and Brad Sutterfield, the tour’s money leader, share eighth place at 4-under-par 68. They are joined there by Jason Allred, Will Moore and Bjorn Widerstedt.

Danny Paniccia, Paul Devenport and Brennan Webb head a group of 10 players at 3-under-par 69. Also in that group are Aurelio Macias, Antonio Maldonado, Craig Matheson, Dean North, Michael Sims, Jon Turcott and Matt Weibring.
