John Daly’s win at the Buick Invitational, his first victory on tour since the 1995 British Open, jumped 214 spots in this week’s Official World Golf Rankings. Daly came in No. 85 in the rankings.
Tiger Woods never threatened the top of the leaderboard last week but remained in first place for 236th consecutive week.
Vijay Singh’s streak of top-10 finishes came to a halt this week when he missed the cut at Torrey Pines. He stayed in second place, followed by Ernie Els, Davis Love III and Jim Furyk.
Mike Weir and Retief Goosen held on to sixth and seventh, respectively. Phil Mickelson collected another top-10 this week and moved up to No. 8. Kenny Perry fell one to ninth and David Toms rounded out the top-10.
Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, Stuart Appleby, Jerry Kelly and Nick Price all stayed pat from last week at Nos. 11-15.
Robert Allenby and Chad Campbell switched spots from last week with the Australian coming in 16th and the American falling to 17th. Thomas Bjorn, who shared fourth at the Buick Invitational, rose one to 18th, followed by Fredrik Jacobson, who fell one.
Fifty-year-old Jay Haas jumped up two to 20th. Justin Leonard fell five to 25th.
Brian Davis won the ANZ Championship on the European Tour and moved up 17 rungs to 54th.
The win for Davis was huge because that moved him into the top-64 in the World Rankings and assured him a spot in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
The top-64 players after this week’s rankings are eligible and Davis and Duffy Waldorf, who tied for fourth at Torrey Pines, moved into the field. Briny Baird and Shingo Katayama fell out and would be the first players in line if someone withdraws.
