MAZATLAN, Mexico -- Jaime Gomez carded a 3-under 69 on Sunday to win the inaugural Corona Mazatlan Classic by three strokes. Gomez ended the event at 18-under-par 270.
Gomez has missed most of the last three seasons due to a shoulder injury. He was playing in just his third event since 2002, but closed the tournament in style with a birdie at the last on El Cid Golf & Country Club.
‘It’s unbelievable,’ said Gomez, who earned his second Canadian Tour win. ‘I really had to keep my emotions in check out there. To make birdie on the final hole, with tears in my eyes, man, it’s just crazy.’
Brien Davis, who shared the third-round lead with Gomez, posted an even-par 72 to take second place at 15-under-par 273. Michael Harris fired a 6-under 66 to get to minus-14. Robert Hamilton took fourth place at 13-under-par 275 after a closing 66.
Gomez won for the 29th time as a professional. He is a two-time winner on the Nationwide Tour and previously won at the 1999 Calgary Telus Open on the Canadian Tour.
‘This game we play, if you are good enough to win, great,’ Gomez said. ‘I needed to find out for myself, could I still do this. I think I proved to myself I can.’
George Bradford and Craig Taylor shared fifth place at 11-under-par 277. David Mathis posted a 3-under 69 to move to 10-under-par 278. He was joined in a tie for seventh place by Brad Fritsch (73) and Derek Gillespie (73). Dong Yi ended one stroke further back at minus-9 after a final-round 68.
