SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Defending champion Brian Harman beat Steve An, 2 and 1, in Thursday’s third round to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at The Olympic Club.
Harman will face Sihwan Kim on Friday. Kim parred the 17th hole in his match against Tyler Obermueller en route to 1-up victory.
Now Harman has a chance to make history if he is able to hang on until Saturday afternoon’s championship match. Harman could be the second player ever to win back-to-back titles. The other was Tiger Woods from 1991-93.
‘It’s getting a lot tougher and a lot of people are looking to beat me,’ said Harman, a left-hander. ‘I don’t like to lose, and I want to take that trophy back home.’
Juan Pablo Candela needed an extra hole to dispatch Kyle Takesue, 1-up. Candela will face Jon Curran in Friday’s quarterfinal. Curran moved on with a 7-and-6 thrashing of Kevin O’Connell.
David Chung won, 1-up, against Matt Savage and will take on Robert Riesen next. Riesen bested Robby Ormand, 2 and 1, in the third round.
Sung Hoon Kang defeated Bradley Johnson, 2 and 1, and now has a date with Timothy McKenney in the quarters. McKenney topped Erik Flores, 3 and 2.
