A $3,389,843 purse, the largest in continental Europe, and a five-year exemption on the European Tour awaits the players, as they battle it out at the 17th annual Linde German Masters.
Two players have had amazing success at this event, first and foremost Bernhard Langer. Langer, who co-promotes this event, is a four-time winner and four-time runner-up here. Colin Montgomerie is another player who has fared well at this event with a win, a second, a third, eighth, ninth and 15th.
Last year, Stephen Leaney won for the fourth time in his career, as he posted four rounds in the 60s to edge out Alex Cejka by one shot. Leaney, who trailed Paul Casey by two shots heading into Sunday, carded a 5-under 67 for a total of 266, 22-under par. Casey, who set the course record of 62 during the third round, shot 71 on the final day to tie for third.
This is the sixth straight year in which Gut Larchenhof is hosting the tournament. The event was held at Berliner Golf and Country Club for four years after seven years at Stuttgart. In the 16-year history of the event, no player has ever successfully defended his title.
Playoffs have decided four of the 16 tournaments, the last coming in 1999 when Sergio Garcia defeated Padraig Harrington and Ian Woosnam for his second career European Tour title.
There have been six holes-in-one at this event. The first was by Des Smyth during round two in 1988. Thomas Ggele, made an ace in 1991 during round three while Eamonn Darcy had one during the final round in 1992. Adam Hunter made the fourth in 1994 during the first round while Mats Lanner aced the the 16th hole in 2000 during round one.
Last year, Jarmo Sandelin joined the list when he holed out during round one on the fourth hole with a 7-iron. During this years event there are also three hole-in-one prizes on offer at the eighth, 11th and 16th holes including a kilogram of gold and an Audi A8.
The European Tour moves to Scotland next week for the dunhill links championship held at the Old Course at St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns. Last year, Padraig Harrington captured that event in a playoff over Eduardo Romero.
