Newcomb

The 32-year-old Newcomb opened with a bogey-free, 6-under 65 and followed up with back-to-back rounds of 7-under 64 to sit inside the top-10 entering the final round for the first time this season and second time of his career. He finished with 2-under 69 to stand at 22-under 262, five shots behind winner Paul Haley II. On the season, Newcomb has made eight cuts in 20 starts with two finishes inside the top 25. He’s in the field for this week’s Price Cutter Charity Championship at Highland Springs Country Club in Springfield, Mo.

The 27-year-old from Kentucky played a few times on the Sunshine Tour in 2015 since when he has tried his hand at the LatinoAmerica and Canadian Tours (he claimed one win on the former and two wins on the latter in 2017). He also managed two starts on the European Tour in late 2017, missing the cut in both. Four starts in South America on the Web.com Tour this year have yet to reap a top 50 finish, but he found something on Thursday in Waterkloof, South Africa. It was a wild ride. He opened his first nine (the back) with a bogey, closed it with an eagle-3 and had a birdie at 13 in-between. On the front nine he started with a pair of birdies, ended it that way too, and at No. 4 endured a double bogey-6.
