2013 featured more extra inning games than any other season in history

Because of expansion here have been more games, overall, per season since 1998 than there was before 1998. As such, overall league counting records will be skewed in favor of the past 15 years. Still, this year has been pretty impressive for extra inning games. How impressive? As Jason Lukehart at Ground Ball With Eyes notes, we have a new record:

When the Blue Jays and Orioles went into the 10th inning Tuesday night, a new record for most extra-inning games in a single season was established. It was the 238th extra-inning game of 2013, besting the mark set in 2011 ...

We’re now at 239 with the Dbacks-Padres game.

I had no idea what the record was before I read Jason’s post, but it certainly did feel like the record was set based on my daily perusal of box scores. Also, and if someone wants to check this I’d be indebted to you, I feel like we have at least doubled the record for 3-2 games. Really, every third game seemed like it was 3-2 this season.
