Free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski is not retiring, according to SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo. He’ll seek a contact this offseason just as he would have previously, but will look for the “right fit,” Cotillo notes.
Pierzynski turns 40 years old on December 30 and is coming off of a dismal season during which he hit .219/.243/.304 in 259 plate appearances. Given that his defense behind the plate is lacking as well, the veteran might have to wait a while to find a good enough offer.
According to FanGraphs’ version of Wins Above Replacement, Pierzynski was the least valuable player (-1.0) among all catchers who took at least 200 plate appearances.
