Shut down earlier this week following a setback with his forearm injury, Angels reliever Michael Kohn has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will undergo season-ending Tommy John elbow surgery.
Kohn has been dominant at Triple-A with a 3.32 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 76 innings and got his fastball into the mid-90s, but struggled to consistently throw strikes in some brief stints with the Angels and will be 26 years old when he returns to the mound in 2013.
Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation, providing more reason to dread any news of a pitcher seeking a second opinion from the Alabama surgeon.
