As expected, Dustin Pedroia underwent season-ending foot surgery today, with doctors inserting a screw into the fractured navicular bone in his left foot. According to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald “the surgery is expected to assure more complete healing in time for Pedroia to be ready for spring training.” And here’s what Pedroia had to say about the decision to go under the knife:
I think putting a screw in is probably the best idea. I don’t want to get to January and go through my workouts and then don’t feel good and I miss some of next year. None of us want that to happen. So, I think putting the screw in is probably the best idea.
He initially tried to play through the pain and after that didn’t work Pedroia hoped to avoid surgery through rest and rehab, but the foot apparently never healed as quickly as required.
