Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Rays’ one-year deal with infielder Asdrubal Cabrera is done. He’ll earn $7.5 million in 2015. The agreement was initially announced on December 30.
Coincidentally, $7.5 million is the same salary Ben Zobrist will earn. Cabrera’s inclusion has made it significantly more likely that the Rays will trade Zobrist, who is eligible for free agency after the season.
Cabrera posted a .692 OPS in 416 plate appearances for the Indians last season before being sent to the Nationals for Zach Walters at the trade deadline. Cabrera posted a .700 OPS in 200 PA for the Nationals. He batted .200 over four games in the NLDS against the eventual world champion Giants.
