The Astros announced the club has acquired catcher Brian McCann and cash considerations from the Yankees in exchange for minor league pitchers Albert Abreu and Jorge Guzman.
It’s been no secret that the Yankees were interested in trading McCann after catching prospect Gary Sanchez broke out August and September this past season. McCann, 32, is still useful as he hit .242/.335/.413 with 20 home runs and 58 RBI in 492 plate appearances. The veteran backstop gives the Astros a No. 1 catcher ahead of Max Stassi and Evan Gattis.
McCann has two years and $34 million remaining on his contract along with a $15 million club option for the 2019 season.
Abreu, 21, was rated the Astros’ seventh-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. He spent the past season between Single-A Quad Cities and High-A Lancaster, putting up an aggregate 4.16 ERA with a 115/58 K/BB ratio in 101 2/3 innings between 16 starts and eight relief appearances.
Guzman, 20, was not in the Astros’ top-30 according to MLB Pipeline. The right-hander spent the past season in rookie ball in the Gulf Coast League and the Appalachian League, compiling an aggregate 4.05 ERA and a 54/17 K/BB ratio in 40 innings.
