We wrote about this a month or two ago when it was announced, but tonight is the debut of the new-look infield at Rogers Centre. Isn’t that pretty? All dirt. No sliding pits. As of now there are no sliding pits in baseball. It marks the first time since June of 1970, when the Reds left Crosley Field for Riverfront, that there are no sliding pits

One day your kids are gonna ask “Mom? Dad? What was a ‘sliding’ pit?” And you’ll say to them “Why do you care, dear? Are you just stalling so you don’t have to do your homework? What, do you think I’m an idiot? I TALK to your teacher, you know. She has email. She said you’ve been sloppy with it lately and that she’s concerned with your overall effort. I realize good grades came easy to you last year, but this is Jr. High School now, buster, and you’ll have to WORK for your grades-- WHAT?! Don’t you DARE take that tone with me!”

“Sliding pits. Please. [to spouse] he gets this from YOU, you know . . . don’t ‘honey’ me.”

Or maybe it will go differently at your house.
