MLB.com’s Patrick Pinak reports that the Braves have placed outfielder Mallex Smith on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left thumb. He is expected to miss 8-10 weeks. The Braves recalled utilityman Emilio Bonifacio from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Smith suffered the injury when he was hit by an Antonio Bastardo pitch in the seventh inning on Sunday. He was hitting .237/.312/.379 with 14 extra-base hits and 14 stolen bases in 192 plate appearances.

Bonifacio, 31, is back in the majors after hitting .270/.321/.319 with 23 stolen bases in 252 plate appearances with Gwinnett. He’ll likely spend most of his time in the outfield but he has experience playing second and third base as well as shortstop.
