The Brewers have released pitcher Yovani Gallardo, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The Brewers will be on the hook for $500,000 of his $2 million non-guaranteed salary.
Gallardo, 32, served up 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and eight walks with 12 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings this spring. He had been vying for a spot in the Brewers’ rotation, but was told he would be shifted into a relief role a couple weeks ago. He was then told on Saturday he would not be included on the Opening Day roster.
Last season with the Mariners, Gallardo struggled to a 5.72 ERA with a 94/60 K/BB ratio in 130 2/3 innings. He wasn’t much better the year prior with the Orioles as he posted a 5.42 ERA in 118 frames.
